PART 3 \u2014 THE TREE SURPRISED ME<\/strong><\/h1>\n

After the incident, the neighbourhood changed.<\/p>\n

People began checking on me more frequently. Mira asked whether I would consider organising a community apple day the following autumn.<\/p>\n

At first, I wanted to refuse.<\/p>\n

Although I had always shared the fruit, the tree still felt deeply personal. It belonged to the memories Dean and I had created together.<\/p>\n

Then I remembered him standing beside that fragile sapling.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive it time,\u201d he had said. \u201cIt\u2019ll surprise you.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I agreed.<\/p>\n

The following spring, the tree bloomed again.<\/p>\n

Not every damaged branch recovered, but the healthy limbs filled with white flowers. By September, apples hung from them once more.<\/p>\n

Mira brought folding tables into my garden. Families arrived carrying jars, pie dishes, cutting boards and cider presses.<\/p>\n

Children picked apples under supervision. Mrs Patel taught several teenagers how to make apple butter. Someone burned the first pie, while someone else added far too much cinnamon to the cider.<\/p>\n

The entire street smelled sweet.<\/p>\n

For the first time, Dean\u2019s tree no longer felt like something I needed to protect alone.<\/p>\n

It had become part of something larger.<\/p>\n

Ryan remained inside for most of the afternoon.<\/p>\n

I did not invite him, but I did not ask anyone to exclude him either.<\/p>\n

Near the end of the celebration, two children carried a paper plate to his front door. A slice of apple pie rested on it beside a cup of cider.<\/p>\n

Ryan opened the door and looked at the children.<\/p>\n

Then he looked across the street at me.<\/p>\n

For a moment, neither of us moved.<\/p>\n

Finally, he accepted the plate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

It was not an apology.<\/p>\n

We did not become friends.<\/p>\n

But Ryan never complained about the tree again. He kept his distance, respected the fence and left my property alone.<\/p>\n

That was enough.<\/p>\n

Dean\u2019s tree still reminds me of his patience, his humour and his belief that good things can continue growing after terrible loss.<\/p>\n

But now it reminds me of something else.<\/p>\n

When Ryan stripped the tree bare, I thought he had damaged one of my final connections to my husband.<\/p>\n

Instead, he forced me to defend it.<\/p>\n

He taught me that remaining polite did not mean allowing someone to walk over me.<\/p>\n

And somehow, the tree that had once represented only grief became the centre of an entire community.<\/p>\n
