Several diners turned away. A waiter started toward us, but stopped when Victor glared at him.<\/p>\n

I had remained silent at the end of the table while Lorraine spent twenty minutes disguising insults as jokes. She criticized Emily\u2019s clothing, cooking, income, and even the way she held her fork.<\/p>\n

Victor finally released her and laughed.<\/p>\n
