That afternoon, while Vanessa and Daniel accepted condolences, an independent audit team entered company headquarters.<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s access was frozen.<\/p>\n

Vanessa\u2019s charity cards were cancelled.<\/p>\n

The board received a sealed evidence package containing bank records, invoices, reservation details, and server logs.<\/p>\n

Those logs also showed that Daniel had attempted to delete vendor files from his phone while standing beside Sofia\u2019s coffin.<\/p>\n

By evening, both of their phones began ringing constantly.<\/p>\n

Daniel found me beside a framed photograph of Sofia.<\/p>\n

In the picture, she was smiling with one front tooth missing and her hair tied in purple ribbons.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re destroying everything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I looked at Sofia\u2019s fearless grin.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. I\u2019m preventing you from destroying anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

He grabbed my arm.<\/p>\n

A voice behind him spoke firmly.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake your hand off her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel turned.<\/p>\n

My attorney stood there with two company board members and a detective from the financial crimes unit.<\/p>\n

Vanessa stared at the detective\u2019s badge.<\/p>\n

For the first time that day, her grief appeared genuine.<\/p>\n

The confrontation took place before the last funeral guest had left.<\/p>\n

I approached the microphone beneath Sofia\u2019s photograph.<\/p>\n

Vanessa rushed toward me, but the detective stepped into her path.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis memorial fund was created to help children receive medical treatment their families cannot afford,\u201d I began. \u201cToday, I must explain why its two directors are being removed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma, stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pressed play.<\/p>\n

His recorded voice came through the speakers.<\/p>\n

**\u201cWhen Sofia\u2019s next fundraiser clears, move twenty thousand into the vendor account. Emma never checks anything unless we tell her to.\u201d**<\/p>\n

Then Vanessa\u2019s laughter followed.<\/p>\n

**\u201cShe\u2019ll repair it. She always repairs everything.\u201d**<\/p>\n

I displayed the false invoices, resort expenses, flight charges, and a photograph the hotel had posted online two days earlier.<\/p>\n

It showed Daniel and Vanessa aboard a catamaran, raising glasses of champagne while my calls went unanswered.<\/p>\n

Vanessa tore off her sunglasses.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou vindictive woman! My daughter is dead!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I replied, my voice finally breaking. \u201cAnd while she was dying, you were spending money donated to help sick children.\u201d<\/p>\n

She struck me across the face.<\/p>\n

Before she could do it again, the detective caught her wrist.<\/p>\n

Daniel quickly changed tactics.<\/p>\n

He stepped closer, softened his expression, and spoke as though we were still alone in our home.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma, we can survive this. I love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at the man I had married twelve years earlier.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy lawyer filed for divorce at nine o\u2019clock this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t take the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt belonged to me before our marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about the company?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour employment was terminated by unanimous board vote twenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa screamed that the charity belonged to her.<\/p>\n

One of the board members handed her an official removal notice.<\/p>\n

Then the detective informed both of them that they were being investigated for fraud, embezzlement, conspiracy, and destruction of financial records.<\/p>\n

They were escorted past Sofia\u2019s white coffin.<\/p>\n

Neither of them looked back at her.<\/p>\n

But their downfall did not end inside that church.<\/p>\n

The audit eventually uncovered seventy-three fraudulent transactions.<\/p>\n

Daniel accepted a plea agreement that included four years in prison, repayment of the stolen funds, and a permanent ban from managing charitable money.<\/p>\n

Vanessa refused to accept responsibility.<\/p>\n

She went to trial, blamed Daniel, the accountants, the board, and eventually me.<\/p>\n

The evidence told a different story.<\/p>\n

She was convicted and received a six-year sentence.<\/p>\n

The scandal cost them their careers, their friends, and every hidden dollar they had treated as their own.<\/p>\n

The court ordered the sale of their investment property to repay Northbridge Relief.<\/p>\n

But legal consequences could not return what they had taken from Sofia.<\/p>\n

During the investigation, I repeatedly asked myself whether I had failed her too.<\/p>\n

I had known Vanessa was selfish.<\/p>\n

I had known Daniel cared far too much about money and appearances.<\/p>\n

Yet I kept covering their mistakes because I believed protecting the family was the same as loving it.<\/p>\n

Sofia had understood more than I realised.<\/p>\n

Several weeks after the funeral, I found a drawing inside the bag she had carried to the hospital.<\/p>\n

It showed three figures holding hands.<\/p>\n

One was labelled **Sofia**.<\/p>\n

One was labelled **Aunt Emma**.<\/p>\n

The third was Grace, the therapy dog from the children\u2019s cardiac ward.<\/p>\n

Vanessa was not in the picture.<\/p>\n

Daniel was not there either.<\/p>\n

On the back, Sofia had written:<\/p>\n

**Aunt Emma always comes.**<\/p>\n

I sat on the floor and cried until I could no longer breathe properly.<\/p>\n
