As the sun began to lower, my mother tapped a spoon against her glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought we could finish with a few words for Amy, Lucas, and the baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brenda stood before my mother finished speaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll begin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her chair scraped across the patio.<\/p>\n

Lucas looked at me silently, asking whether he should stop her.<\/p>\n

I shook my head.<\/p>\n

Brenda raised her glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst, a toast to my grandchild. May this baby inherit my son\u2019s intelligence, his common sense, and, if we are fortunate, his metabolism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several guests shifted uncomfortably.<\/p>\n

Then she looked directly at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd let us hope Amy remembers that after today she can stop eating for two.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody laughed.<\/p>\n

Brenda continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps she can return to the gym before Lucas becomes embarrassed to be seen with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The entire garden became silent.<\/p>\n

A child near the fence lowered his bubble wand.<\/p>\n

I felt every guest glance toward me and then quickly look away.<\/p>\n

The napkin twisted between my fingers until it tore.<\/p>\n

Lucas shoved his chair backwards.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brenda rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Lucas replied. \u201cIt was cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stepped forward, but my mother gently touched his arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll handle this.\u201d<\/p>\n

She did not approach Brenda.<\/p>\n

Instead, she walked to the gift table and returned carrying the cedar box.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have one final tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n

She untied the ribbon and lifted the lid.<\/p>\n

Inside were dozens of envelopes. Some were white, some pink, and one was decorated with stickers.<\/p>\n

Each envelope had the words **For the Baby** written across the front.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe asked every guest to write a letter,\u201d Mom explained. \u201cSome contain advice, family stories, or promises for the future. The baby will read them when she is older.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guests smiled.<\/p>\n

Lucas\u2019s grandfather announced that his letter included fishing lessons. My niece said hers contained rules about cookies.<\/p>\n

Then my mother reached beneath the stack and removed one blank envelope.<\/p>\n

She carried it to Brenda.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saved this one for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brenda stared at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody told me about this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI sent you the same message as everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI must have missed it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother offered her a pen.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can write your letter now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brenda gave a nervous laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere? With everyone watching?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou do not need to read it aloud.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat am I supposed to say?\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother\u2019s expression remained calm.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly what you want your grandchild to know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brenda accepted the pen, but her fingers had begun trembling.<\/p>\n

My mother leaned closer.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen your grandchild opens this box years from now, what would you like her to remember about you?\u201d<\/p>\n

There was no anger in her voice.<\/p>\n

That made the question impossible to escape.<\/p>\n

Brenda looked at the empty page.<\/p>\n

Then she looked at me.<\/p>\n

I stopped wiping my face because I wanted her to see what her joke had done.<\/p>\n

Her gaze moved toward Lucas, who stood behind me with both hands resting on my shoulders.<\/p>\n

Around her sat nearly fifty people who had already found something loving to leave behind.<\/p>\n

Brenda lowered the pen.<\/p>\n

The tip touched the paper.<\/p>\n

Nothing appeared.<\/p>\n

For the first time since I had known her, she had no criticism, warning, or cruel observation disguised as concern.<\/p>\n

She had only an empty page.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t feel well,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

She folded the blank sheet, placed it inside the envelope, and set it beside the box.<\/p>\n

\u201cI should leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

No one tried to stop her.<\/p>\n

Her heels crossed the patio, and the gate closed behind her.<\/p>\n

My mother placed the blank envelope with the others.<\/p>\n

Then she turned toward the cake.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho wants the corner piece?\u201d<\/p>\n

The children shouted immediately.<\/p>\n

Conversation slowly returned. Someone restarted the music, and my aunt handed me an enormous piece of cake.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoctor\u2019s orders.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

Guests approached me one by one.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are already a wonderful mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat baby is lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their words did not erase Brenda\u2019s insults.<\/p>\n

They did something more important.<\/p>\n

They placed them in the proper proportion.<\/p>\n
