I reserved the window seat because my mother had always loved looking at the sky.<\/p>\n

When I was young, she would stop washing dishes whenever the sunset turned pink. She would stand beside the kitchen window with a towel resting over one shoulder and say, \u201cCome look, Daniel. You never get the same sky twice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Six months before our flight, doctors diagnosed her with lymphoma.<\/p>\n

She lost most of her hair.<\/p>\n

Some days, walking from her bedroom to the kitchen required several breaks.<\/p>\n

Even on the way to treatment, she continued pointing out clouds that resembled animals.<\/p>\n

I told Mom, \u201cThat is a five-hour flight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know how airplanes work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen put the mailbox in Oregon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The following morning, she appeared at breakfast with her blue suitcase already packed beside the front door.<\/p>\n

So I bought the tickets.<\/p>\n

I paid extra for seats near the front and reserved the window for her. I also arranged wheelchair assistance and early boarding.<\/p>\n

I wanted the journey to go perfectly.<\/p>\n

Mom became nervous the moment we entered the airport.<\/p>\n

She repeatedly checked her handbag for her identification. She asked twice whether she was allowed to bring her medication onto the aircraft.<\/p>\n

When an airport employee pushed her wheelchair toward the gate, she gripped the armrests until her knuckles whitened.<\/p>\n

I pointed toward airplanes, joked about the cost of airport coffee, and repeatedly offered her water, snacks, and a sweater.<\/p>\n

Every time she smiled, I felt useful.<\/p>\n

We were allowed to board early.<\/p>\n

Mom settled beside the window. I sat next to her, with an older woman occupying the aisle seat.<\/p>\n

Across from us, a man wearing a gray blazer glanced in our direction before opening a magazine.<\/p>\n

During takeoff, Mom grabbed my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat one?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe shaking?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNormal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the wing falls off, will that be normal too?\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman beside me laughed.<\/p>\n

Mom joined her, though she continued holding my hand until the aircraft leveled out.<\/p>\n

For the next hour, we talked quietly.<\/p>\n

Mom asked me to identify the towns below us. Since I had no idea where we were, she invented names herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s Millersburg,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks like a Millersburg.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she mentioned my father.<\/p>\n

Dad had died eight years earlier after a heart attack no one had known was coming.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe would have loved this view,\u201d Mom said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe would have complained about the legroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several minutes later, the man across the aisle slammed his magazine shut.<\/p>\n

Mom jumped at the noise.<\/p>\n
