\u201cMy card?\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe family card. Evan is trying to pay the caterer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was never a family card.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence filled the line before Evan grabbed the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cStop being dramatic and fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed, completely convinced I would back down.<\/p>\n

I ended the call and drove directly to the Beverly Hills Hotel, where Marcus was waiting with two coffees and a thick red folder.<\/p>\n

At noon, every authorized credit card had been frozen. Fifteen minutes later, the automatic payments for the Range Rover, Claire\u2019s studio, and Evan\u2019s office stopped processing. By one o\u2019clock, the property manager delivered formal notice that the family trust would not renew their lease once it expired sixty days later.<\/p>\n

Nothing had been hidden.<\/p>\n

Nothing was illegal.<\/p>\n

Nothing had been done in anger.<\/p>\n

Every payment belonged to me, and every agreement clearly allowed me to withdraw support.<\/p>\n

Marcus tapped another document.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evan had been sending invoices from his production company to one of my subsidiaries.<\/p>\n

None of the projects existed.<\/p>\n

Even worse, Claire had used my electronic signature to guarantee a three-hundred-thousand-dollar influencer campaign.<\/p>\n

I stared at the copied signature.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe copied it from the foundation contract,\u201d Marcus explained. \u201cOur forensic consultant verified the document history.\u201d<\/p>\n

The humiliation at Christmas lunch suddenly made perfect sense.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t simply cruelty.<\/p>\n

It was a distraction.<\/p>\n

They wanted me pushed aside while they continued using my reputation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey expected me to keep paying quietly,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

My chest tightened, but my voice remained calm.<\/p>\n

Evan held up his phone.<\/p>\n

The color drained from his face.<\/p>\n

Claire looked toward him.<\/p>\n

He recovered almost instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s confused.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marcus stepped into the doorway from the adjoining room.<\/p>\n

Evan froze.<\/p>\n

Marcus lifted the red folder.<\/p>\n

At that moment, the elevator doors opened and two investigators from my company\u2019s compliance department walked into the hallway.<\/p>\n

Lorraine quietly whispered,<\/p>\n

\u201cEvan?\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed accusingly toward me.<\/p>\n
