On my twenty-fourth birthday, my father sold the Toyota I had purchased with my own money.<\/p>\n

Then he placed everything from the car on my bed and sent me a message:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe sold it for $8,000. Jake needs tuition money. Family comes first. Be grateful we raised you properly.\u201d<\/p>\n

I read the text while sitting in the hospital cafeteria during a twelve-hour nursing shift. Around me, people continued talking, eating, and answering pagers, while my entire understanding of my family quietly fell apart.<\/p>\n

My name is Haley Mitchell.<\/p>\n

I was the eldest daughter in a house where responsibility always seemed to belong to me.<\/p>\n

My brother Jake was twenty, charming and careless, constantly \u201cfinding himself\u201d while everyone else paid for the process. My younger sister Melissa was eighteen and still believed whatever version of events our parents gave her.<\/p>\n

I was the dependable one.<\/p>\n

I babysat, worked late shifts, and gave up an academic scholarship after my father accused me of being selfish for wanting to study far from home. I attended community college instead, worked in a diner until midnight, and studied nursing beneath fluorescent library lights.<\/p>\n

When I graduated, I hoped my family might finally respect what I had built.<\/p>\n

Instead, my father told me it was time to contribute.<\/p>\n

For three years, I handed over money for supposed emergencies. Somehow, those emergencies always became Jake\u2019s electronics, Melissa\u2019s activities, or mistakes my father refused to explain.<\/p>\n

The Toyota was the first major thing I had ever owned completely by myself.<\/p>\n

It was a used 2015 Corolla with a scratch near the rear bumper and a stubborn cup holder. But I had paid for every dollar through extra shifts, skipped lunches, and a savings account my parents knew nothing about.<\/p>\n

That car gave me freedom.<\/p>\n

I could work without borrowing transportation. I could shop without explaining where I had been. After difficult shifts, I could sit alone in the parking lot and breathe before returning to a home where I often felt like a bank account with a bedroom.<\/p>\n

When I bought it, my father looked offended.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou spent your money on this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI need reliable transportation for work.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother immediately mentioned Jake\u2019s tuition.<\/p>\n

That was how things always worked. My needs became selfish whenever someone else wanted something.<\/p>\n

Now they had sold the car without asking.<\/p>\n

When I called, my father spoke as if he had disposed of an old chair.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe car was registered in my name.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother took the phone.<\/p>\n

Then I heard Jake laughing in the background.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe can take the bus.\u201d<\/p>\n

I asked which dealership had bought it and called them immediately.<\/p>\n

The sales manager became uncomfortable when I explained the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a title transfer with your signature,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been working since before six this morning. I signed nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a long silence, he advised me to file a police report.<\/p>\n

That was when I understood.<\/p>\n

My parents had not merely taken my property.<\/p>\n

Someone had forged my name.<\/p>\n
