My mother stared at the sealed envelope as though it might explode.<\/p>\n

My attorney\u2019s voice came through the kitchen speaker, calm and precise.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore Richard and Elaine attempt to sell Natalie\u2019s property, perhaps they should review the default notice attached to their own home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Only seconds earlier, my parents had been discussing renovation costs, listing photographs, and how soon I would be required to move out.<\/p>\n

Now my father gripped the kitchen island as if it were the only thing keeping him upright.<\/p>\n

The realtor, Ms. Brennan, opened the blue folder and read the county recording number, the property description, and the name listed beneath **OWNER OF RECORD**.<\/p>\n

Natalie Harper.<\/p>\n

Not my father.<\/p>\n

Not my mother.<\/p>\n

Me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s impossible,\u201d Mom whispered.<\/p>\n

I pushed the envelope toward her.<\/p>\n

\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She tore it apart, and a certified deed landed directly on top of the listing agreement she had already completed in her own name.<\/p>\n

Their invented ownership now sat beneath legal proof of mine.<\/p>\n

Dad snatched up the deed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis signature could be forged.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was signed in Aunt Rose\u2019s attorney\u2019s office,\u201d I replied. \u201cTwo witnesses were present, the appointment was notarized, and the transfer was recorded eighteen months before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n

The date mattered.<\/p>\n

Six months after Rose signed the deed, my parents began telling relatives that she was confused and no longer capable of managing her affairs.<\/p>\n

That was a lie.<\/p>\n

Until her final week, Aunt Rose remained sharp. She managed her own accounts, corrected medical bills, remembered everyone\u2019s birthdays, and regularly defeated me at chess.<\/p>\n

She also understood my parents better than I ever had.<\/p>\n

Ms. Brennan pushed the listing agreement away.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told me this property belonged to Rose\u2019s estate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should have,\u201d Mom snapped.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat wasn\u2019t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad accused me of manipulating a dying woman.<\/p>\n

For most of my life, those words would have sent me into a frantic explanation. I would have listed every fact and begged them to believe I was not selfish or incompetent.<\/p>\n

This time, I remained calm.<\/p>\n

Aunt Rose had taught me that evidence did not need to shout.<\/p>\n

I opened the folder again.<\/p>\n

Inside was a letter from Rose\u2019s doctor confirming that she had been mentally competent when she signed the deed. Behind it were statements from her attorney and financial adviser.<\/p>\n

Rose had prepared for this exact reaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was planned,\u201d Dad said bitterly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I answered. \u201cBy Aunt Rose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom stared at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would she leave you a four-bedroom house?\u201d<\/p>\n

She no longer questioned whether the documents were genuine.<\/p>\n

She wanted to know why Rose had chosen me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI moved in after her surgery,\u201d I said. \u201cI drove her to medical appointments, handled repairs, paid the taxes when her accounts were temporarily frozen, and lived here with her for three years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would have helped if she had asked,\u201d Mom insisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rose called my mother after her first operation, but Mom said hospitals made her uncomfortable. She asked Dad to drive her to a specialist, but he had a golf tournament. She asked my brother Kevin to visit, and my parents told him she needed professional caregivers rather than relatives hovering around her.<\/p>\n

Dad demanded that I turn off the speaker.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is private family business.\u201d<\/p>\n

My attorney answered first.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt became a legal matter when you entered a home you do not own, represented yourselves as the owners, and attempted to have Natalie sign a document agreeing to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms. Brennan immediately began deleting the photographs she had taken.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was told Natalie was an occupant refusing to cooperate with an estate sale.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ownership is not disputed,\u201d my attorney said. \u201cIt is officially recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom pressed both hands against the counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cFine. Rose gave her the house. But what does that have to do with our property?\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned to the next document.<\/p>\n
