My parents fell behind on their mortgage, taxes, and credit cards. Publicly, they told everyone they were reorganizing their investments.<\/p>\n

In reality, their home was days away from foreclosure.<\/p>\n

Aunt Rose rescued them.<\/p>\n

She paid their overdue mortgage and property taxes. In return, they signed a promissory note secured against their house. The interest was modest, and the monthly payment was far lower than any bank would have offered.<\/p>\n

They made payments for years.<\/p>\n

Then Rose died.<\/p>\n

Four months later, they stopped.<\/p>\n

Dad picked up the assignment document.<\/p>\n

\u201cRose would never have transferred this note to Natalie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not threatening anyone,\u201d I said. \u201cYour loan is in default.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kevin frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat loan?\u201d<\/p>\n

My parents had spent years praising Kevin\u2019s career while protecting him from anything that might damage their perfect family image. He knew Rose had helped them once, but he had never been told that she had saved their house from foreclosure.<\/p>\n

Dad dismissed it as old family accounting.<\/p>\n

My attorney corrected him.<\/p>\n

\u201cA recorded loan with an unpaid balance of three hundred twelve thousand dollars is not family accounting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kevin slowly removed his coat.<\/p>\n

Mom stared at Dad.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said it was handled.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou stopped paying four months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad looked at me as though his choice were somehow my betrayal.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could have called.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy attorney sent three notices.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should have called personally.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you could insult me and tell me I was too stupid to understand the documents?\u201d<\/p>\n

He had no answer.<\/p>\n

Ms. Brennan closed her tablet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will not be representing anyone here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom tried to persuade her to list their house after the \u201cmisunderstanding\u201d was settled.<\/p>\n

The realtor glanced at my suitcase.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe this is a misunderstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

After she left, Mom finally asked an honest question.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n

I removed another envelope.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have thirty days to pay the missed installments, late fees, legal expenses, and required tax reserve.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if we don\u2019t?\u201d Dad demanded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe trust can begin foreclosure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom\u2019s face drained of color.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would put your parents on the street?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at the suitcase she had dragged from my closet.<\/p>\n

\u201cTen minutes ago, you gave me two weeks to leave a house you never owned.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was different.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you thought I had nowhere else to go?\u201d<\/p>\n

Kevin stepped between us.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan they fix the default?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. The agreement gives them that right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad asked whether I would waive the fees.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo this is revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRevenge would be creating a debt that never existed. This is enforcement of the contract you signed.\u201d<\/p>\n

My attorney added that I had rejected harsher options and chosen the least aggressive legal remedy.<\/p>\n

That destroyed the story my father wanted to tell.<\/p>\n

I was not trying to seize his home.<\/p>\n
