One hour after I gave birth to my son, my husband entered my hospital room holding another woman\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n

Byron stopped at the foot of my bed as casually as if he had arrived late for dinner. Our newborn son, Duncan, slept against my chest while my father-in-law, Thomas, stood near the window holding a blue gift bag.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Mary,\u201d Byron said.<\/p>\n

No one answered.<\/p>\n

Then he added, \u201cShe\u2019s pregnant. The baby is mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even the nurse beside my bed stopped moving.<\/p>\n

For ten years, Byron and I had built a life together. For five of those years, we endured fertility treatments, injections, failed procedures, and disappointment. He had held my hand through every appointment. When I finally became pregnant, he pressed his face against my stomach and whispered, \u201cOur family. Finally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now our son was barely an hour old, and Byron had brought his pregnant mistress to meet him.<\/p>\n

Byron had waited until I was exhausted, hurting, and unable to stand without help. He believed I would remain calm because I had spent years protecting him from embarrassment.<\/p>\n

Thomas lowered the gift bag.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing, son?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m telling the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHere? On the day your child was born?\u201d<\/p>\n

Byron claimed our marriage had become unhappy because everything revolved around fertility treatments and pregnancy. According to him, I had stopped being his wife.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to become the mother of your child,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou changed,\u201d he replied. \u201cWhat was I supposed to do? Stay lonely?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary looked at him in disbelief.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told me you and Shay had already separated.\u201d<\/p>\n

She knew he was married, but Byron had given each of us a different version of his life.<\/p>\n

Then he announced that he planned to be with Mary.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll keep this calm,\u201d he whispered. \u201cThat\u2019s who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pressed the call button.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to argue,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m going to make a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Nurse Patricia returned, I asked her to remove Byron and Mary from the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re throwing me out on the day my son was born?\u201d Byron demanded.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou brought your mistress into my recovery room.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Duncan\u2019s father.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m the woman who gave birth to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomas pointed toward the hallway.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeave.\u201d<\/p>\n

After they were gone, my hands began shaking.<\/p>\n
