\u201cWhat vow renewal?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were supposed to repeat our vows on Saturday. Duncan\u2019s christening was scheduled for Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Byron had planned to stand beside me and publicly renew his promises while Mary carried his child.<\/p>\n

She also learned that our fertility treatments had still been happening when their relationship began. Byron had told her they had ended a year earlier.<\/p>\n

Before she left, I asked her to send me every message concerning me, Duncan, and our home.<\/p>\n

She did.<\/p>\n

During the following six weeks, I recovered from childbirth, cared for Duncan, saved the evidence, and met with an attorney.<\/p>\n

I did not try to keep Byron away from his son.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want him involved,\u201d I explained. \u201cBut Duncan needs stability, and my home needs boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n

We arranged scheduled parenting time and written communication. Byron would no longer be free to enter my house whenever he pleased.<\/p>\n

The vow-renewal reception had already been paid for, and the deposit was non-refundable. Rather than waste the food and venue, I decided to transform the event.<\/p>\n

We invited struggling families, new parents, and people who needed a warm meal.<\/p>\n

Byron wanted Mary\u2019s loyalty, my respectable image, Thomas\u2019s money, and everyone\u2019s approval. He had never truly chosen between us. He expected to keep both lives.<\/p>\n

The minister stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are here to feed families,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will not turn their meal into a stage for one man\u2019s excuses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Byron accused me of exposing our private business.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou brought Mary into my hospital room,\u201d I replied. \u201cYou gave up the right to demand silence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I told him that all contact concerning Duncan would be in writing and every visit would follow the agreed schedule.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m his father.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen act like one. Learn his feeding times. Arrive when you promise. Stop using him as proof that you are a family man.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that moment, Mary entered.<\/p>\n

She had expected the elegant private reception Byron had promised her. Instead, she found him dressed for the ceremony he claimed no longer existed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou came here to renew your vows,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to manage the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary removed a key from her purse and placed it in his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t choose either of us. You chose whatever story protected you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she walked away.<\/p>\n

Byron looked at me as though I should rescue him.<\/p>\n

I picked up a tray of food.<\/p>\n

Thomas faced his son.<\/p>\n
