We met in Eric\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

A wooden box sat between us.<\/p>\n

For several seconds, the words made no sense.<\/p>\n

Then he placed a file in front of me. Inside was a signed acknowledgement of paternity from before my birth, letters my mother had returned unopened, and evidence of a genealogy match.<\/p>\n

Years earlier, I had submitted my DNA while searching for relatives on my mother\u2019s side.<\/p>\n

Nathan had used it to find me.<\/p>\n

He learned where I volunteered and deliberately chose that hospice.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe arranged everything?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

I stood so quickly my chair hit the wall.<\/p>\n

Nathan had known exactly who I was while asking me to pretend to be his daughter. Eric had known too. They had taken away my right to decide whether I wanted a relationship with the man who abandoned my mother.<\/p>\n

Eric admitted Nathan feared I would refuse to see him if I knew the truth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was my choice,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Eric lowered his eyes. \u201cI told myself he was dying. I believed six weeks of comfort would hurt less than the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou decided his comfort mattered more than my consent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d he said. \u201cI was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside the wooden box were two bundles of letters\u2014one addressed to me and one to Eric. Beneath them were papers leaving us joint ownership of Millie\u2019s Diner.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho are you to Nathan?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Eric\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis son.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan had married years after abandoning my mother. Eric had grown up in Nathan\u2019s home, but their relationship had never been warm.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe paid the bills and attended school meetings,\u201d Eric said. \u201cBut he never asked how I felt unless the answer affected my grades.\u201d<\/p>\n

That night, I read Nathan\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n

He admitted he had failed both of us differently. He had abandoned me completely, while raising Eric without affection.<\/p>\n

He had arranged our meeting because he wanted to discover whether I could care about him before learning what he had done.<\/p>\n

That realization made me feel sick.<\/p>\n

When Nathan asked whether he had been convincing, he had not been pretending to be my father.<\/p>\n

He had been pretending not to be.<\/p>\n

His regret had become one more demand. He wanted forgiveness without giving me the chance to question him, reject him, or tell him how his absence had shaped my life.<\/p>\n

Nathan\u2019s final hope was that Eric and I would give each other the family he had denied us.<\/p>\n

I called Eric the next morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not required to become family because Nathan wanted a clean ending.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI agree.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the next month, we communicated only through separate lawyers.<\/p>\n

Millie\u2019s Diner could not be sold without both signatures. The building was valuable, but the business was struggling. Eric wanted to sell the property, pay the debts, and divide what remained.<\/p>\n

At first, I agreed.<\/p>\n
