PART 3: THE FAMILY WE CHOSE OURSELVES<\/strong><\/h1>\n

A silver-haired waitress named Rosa recognised me immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou came here with Nathan.\u201d<\/p>\n

She led us to the corner booth where he and I had eaten apple pie.<\/p>\n

\u201cNathan began here as a dishwasher,\u201d she explained. \u201cYears later, he bought the building.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she told me something I had not known.<\/p>\n

Every year on my birthday, Nathan came to that booth and ordered two slices of pie.<\/p>\n

For a moment, I felt something soften.<\/p>\n

Then I reminded myself that missing someone was not the same as finding them.<\/p>\n

Six employees depended on the diner. Selling it would pay the debt, but it would also erase their livelihoods.<\/p>\n

Eric remained practical.<\/p>\n

The room became silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cI chose his wishes over her right to know,\u201d Eric continued. \u201cWhatever happens to this diner, don\u2019t blame her.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was the first time he stopped protecting Nathan\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n

Three days later, Eric sent me a written apology. He offered to resign as estate representative and pay for an independent lawyer to review every document.<\/p>\n

His apology finally cost him something.<\/p>\n

I agreed to examine the diner\u2019s finances.<\/p>\n

For four months, Eric and I met twice a week. We argued about staffing, debt, operating hours, and whether saving Millie\u2019s was loyalty or guilt.<\/p>\n

Eventually, we found a solution. We sold an unused piece of land behind the building and reduced operating hours until the remaining debts were manageable.<\/p>\n

Trust developed slowly.<\/p>\n

Eric disclosed his mistakes before I discovered them. I learned he had spent much of his savings on Nathan\u2019s treatment. He learned I had worked two jobs while caring for my mother.<\/p>\n

Neither truth erased what had happened.<\/p>\n

But it changed the shape of our anger.<\/p>\n

Later, Millie\u2019s formed a partnership with the hospice. Once a month, the diner served free breakfasts to patients\u2019 families.<\/p>\n

We did not rename the restaurant after Nathan.<\/p>\n

We left the corner booth unchanged.<\/p>\n

For once, neither of us allowed Nathan to control the timing.<\/p>\n

We sat together until Rosa switched on the lights. In the window, three chairs appeared side by side.<\/p>\n

Families from the hospice began entering.<\/p>\n

Nathan\u2019s slice of pie remained in the centre of the table.<\/p>\n
