\u201cSo have I, David.\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed the cup on the counter before it slipped from my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s different about it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s my mother.\u201d He spoke as though that explained everything. \u201cYou\u2019re my wife. You can handle things. She can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said nothing.<\/p>\n

I watched him pour himself a glass of water and walk past me toward the living room.<\/p>\n

His phone lit up on the counter.<\/p>\n

Brenda.<\/p>\n

Her fifth call that evening.<\/p>\n

I stared at the screen until it darkened and realized something small but devastating.<\/p>\n

He had not asked once that night how our children were feeling.<\/p>\n

I was still carrying the damp washcloth from Sam\u2019s forehead when David entered the kitchen with a zipped carry-on suitcase.<\/p>\n

He placed it beside the door as casually as though it had always been there.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo listen,\u201d he said, avoiding my eyes. \u201cMom and I fly out Thursday. Fourteen days. The Mediterranean.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

My scrubs still smelled like Ellie\u2019s cough medicine. The previous night, I had heard part of his phone call from the hallway\u2014packing list, Mom, I\u2019ll bring the adapter\u2014and convinced myself they were planning another weekend at the lake house.<\/p>\n

\u201cFourteen days,\u201d I repeated.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe needs to relax, Rach. You know how her blood pressure gets. The doctor practically ordered it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid, the kids have the flu. Both of them. Sam\u2019s fever hit 103 last night.\u201d<\/p>\n

He waved one hand as though I were giving him an ordinary weather update.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a great mom. You can handle a couple of sniffles. My work bonus finally came through, so the timing is perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA work bonus,\u201d I said slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cPremium suite. Balcony. She\u2019s never had anything like it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I lowered the washcloth before he could see my hand shaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what about the trip we talked about? The one with the kids in August?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll do it next year. This is for Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everything was for his mother.<\/p>\n

It always had been.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the way,\u201d I said, reaching for the folder on the counter, \u201cthe bank finally sent over the refinance paperwork. They need your signature before Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n

He barely looked at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeave it there. I\u2019ll sign whatever they need tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

David laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cRach, you\u2019ve handled our paperwork for years. I trust you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid, I haven\u2019t slept in two days. I have a client presentation Monday. Sam is asking for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll be fine.\u201d He was already looking at his phone. \u201cMom\u2019s calling. Hang on.\u201d<\/p>\n

A year earlier, I would have followed him into the hallway.<\/p>\n

I would have apologized for my tone.<\/p>\n

I would have found some way to make him feel less guilty for abandoning us.<\/p>\n

I nearly stepped after him.<\/p>\n

Then I glanced toward the stairs, where Sam was coughing in his bedroom, and stopped.<\/p>\n

For the first time in our marriage, I allowed David to walk away without chasing him.<\/p>\n

He moved into the hallway, and his voice became soft and eager in the way it no longer became for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Mom. Yes. I told her. No, she\u2019s fine with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood alone in the center of my kitchen as something quiet settled inside my chest.<\/p>\n

It was not anger.<\/p>\n

Not yet.<\/p>\n

It was colder than anger.<\/p>\n

Patient.<\/p>\n

Two days later, they were gone.<\/p>\n

The house smelled of vapor rub and burned toast. Ellie had finally started sleeping through the night, and Sam could keep down toast and applesauce.<\/p>\n
