The evening before our trip, I sat cross-legged on the carpet in my daughter Emma\u2019s bedroom, closing a small suitcase decorated with cloud stickers she had chosen herself.<\/p>\n

It had been two years since her father, Sean, passed away.<\/p>\n

This was the first time since then that I had allowed myself to plan anything that was not a medical appointment or a therapy session.<\/p>\n

We were only going to the beach for four days.<\/p>\n

My six-year-old daughter was already asleep with her stuffed airplane tucked beneath one arm. She had named it \u201cBuzz\u201d the previous year, and from that day on, it had rarely left her side.<\/p>\n

I remained on the floor for a moment, brushing my thumb across the cloud stickers on her suitcase.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got this, Tina,\u201d I whispered to myself. \u201cIt\u2019s just a flight.\u201d<\/p>\n

My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n

An email from the airline had arrived.<\/p>\n

I read it quickly.<\/p>\n

There had been an aircraft change for the following morning\u2019s flight, and some passengers had been reassigned automatically.<\/p>\n

I immediately checked our boarding passes.<\/p>\n

Emma was still listed in seat 7A.<\/p>\n

I was still in 7B.<\/p>\n

The seats remained together, and most importantly, Emma still had the window.<\/p>\n

It would be her first time flying.<\/p>\n

I had reserved that seat four months earlier because Emma was autistic and needed the view outside to stay regulated.<\/p>\n

Watching clouds move past the window, following the sunlight, and seeing the open sky often helped bring her back whenever she began approaching a meltdown.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re good,\u201d I told myself. \u201cThe window seat is still ours.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, Emma stood beside me at the airport gate, pressing Buzz against her chest while staring through the glass at the enormous airplane outside.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy, is that the one?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the one, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I get to see the clouds?\u201d<\/p>\n

I knelt until we were eye to eye.<\/p>\n

She gave me the small, cautious smile she saved for moments that felt too important to celebrate loudly.<\/p>\n

My chest tightened with love.<\/p>\n

Nearby, the gate agent frowned at her computer. One hand rested against her headset as she murmured something I could not hear. She briefly glanced toward the jet bridge before returning to the screen.<\/p>\n

I paid little attention.<\/p>\n

Airports were always full of minor complications being handled behind the scenes.<\/p>\n

\u201cReady, Em?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReady!\u201d<\/p>\n

I took her warm little hand, and together we walked down the jet bridge.<\/p>\n

Buzz hung from Emma\u2019s other hand, one plush wing dragging lightly across the carpet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe window seat is waiting for you,\u201d I whispered, mostly to reassure myself.<\/p>\n

I had no idea that the email I had barely read the night before had already changed everything.<\/p>\n

Boarding went smoothly until we reached row 7.<\/p>\n

Emma\u2019s fingers immediately tightened around my sleeve.<\/p>\n

Her stuffed airplane was crushed against her chest.<\/p>\n

A woman was already seated in 7A.<\/p>\n

She appeared to be in her late forties and wore an expensive, carefully pressed outfit. Her handbag had been placed neatly beneath the seat in front of her.<\/p>\n

I stopped beside her and offered my gentlest smile.<\/p>\n

She slowly looked from me to Emma, then gave a dismissive scoff.<\/p>\n

\u201cI paid for the window seat. So did you, apparently. Sounds like a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that moment, a flight attendant appeared beside us.<\/p>\n

Her name tag said Lisa.<\/p>\n

Without speaking, I handed her our boarding passes.<\/p>\n

She examined them, then checked the other woman\u2019s pass and released a weary breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so sorry about the confusion, ma\u2019am. The aircraft was changed this morning. Some passengers were automatically reassigned, and there was a mistake. This seat was accidentally assigned to two passengers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
