\u201cMy daughter has autism. The window seat really helps her stay calm. Please,\u201d I told the flight attendant.<\/p>\n

Lisa addressed Ms. Reyes with controlled politeness.<\/p>\n

\u201cMs. Reyes, since 7A wasn\u2019t your original booking, would you be willing to take an aisle seat in row 12? It\u2019s a few rows behind and closer to your assigned row.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms. Reyes drew her shoulders back as though the suggestion itself offended her.<\/p>\n

Emma pulled gently at my hand.<\/p>\n

A faint tremor had begun in her fingers.<\/p>\n

I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n

She was beginning to lose her sense of control.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, please,\u201d I said, looking at Ms. Reyes while keeping my tone soft. \u201cI paid for a window seat too, and it\u2019s important for my daughter. She needs this. It\u2019s her first flight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms. Reyes refused even to look at Emma.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy should I move? I\u2019m already settled. Maybe next time, arrive earlier or something.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wanted to tell her I had reserved those seats four months ago.<\/p>\n

But I remained silent.<\/p>\n

Before guiding us farther back, she looked toward the rear of the cabin. Her attention settled briefly on a couple sitting beside a window in row 19.<\/p>\n

She walked toward them and bent down to speak quietly.<\/p>\n

I could not hear their conversation, but both passengers looked past Lisa toward Emma. They exchanged a glance, and one of them nodded.<\/p>\n

Lisa smiled with visible gratitude.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you,\u201d she said softly.<\/p>\n

Then she returned to us as though nothing unusual had occurred.<\/p>\n

Ms. Reyes had already turned toward the window. Her phone was raised as she photographed the wing.<\/p>\n

I led Emma toward row 12.<\/p>\n

An older woman seated across the aisle watched us settle in. Her expression was warm and gentle.<\/p>\n

She smiled at Emma, then at me, without asking questions.<\/p>\n

It felt like the first kindness I had received all morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning,\u201d I greeted.<\/p>\n

She returned the greeting.<\/p>\n

I fastened Emma\u2019s seat belt and placed Buzz securely in her lap.<\/p>\n

As the engines began to rumble, I kept my voice light and rhythmic.<\/p>\n

Emma clutched the stuffed airplane more tightly.<\/p>\n

When the cabin door closed, I noticed Lisa speaking quietly through the interphone near the front. She listened for several seconds before replying with a simple, \u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n

I thought nothing of it.<\/p>\n

I closed my eyes and silently prayed that I could keep Emma calm for the next five hours.<\/p>\n

I did not know the captain had just been told exactly what happened in row 7.<\/p>\n

Once the plane reached the air, I entered what I privately called mission mode.<\/p>\n

I placed Emma\u2019s noise-canceling headphones over her ears and opened her coloring book to a page filled with airplanes\u2014the same page she loved coloring repeatedly.<\/p>\n

\u201cCount with me, baby,\u201d I whispered, pointing at the pictures. \u201cOne cloud, two clouds, three clouds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emma tried.<\/p>\n

She truly did.<\/p>\n

But after twenty minutes, she began rocking against her seat belt.<\/p>\n

A low whimper escaped her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy, sky. I want sky,\u201d Emma whimpered.<\/p>\n

My chest ached.<\/p>\n

From her middle seat, all she could see was the beige wall beside the aisle and the back of another passenger\u2019s head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know, sweetheart. I know.\u201d<\/p>\n

The silver-haired woman across the aisle leaned toward us with a kind smile.<\/p>\n

Her hair was pinned neatly behind her head, and her eyes carried the softness of someone who had lived long enough to recognize distress without needing an explanation.<\/p>\n

\u201cSweetheart, would you like to peek out my window for a second?\u201d the older woman asked.<\/p>\n

Emma looked uncertainly at me.<\/p>\n

I nodded to show her it was safe.<\/p>\n

She stretched her neck toward the window and saw a narrow strip of blue sky before settling back into her seat.<\/p>\n

It was not enough.<\/p>\n

Lisa thanked them with a sincere smile before continuing down the aisle.<\/p>\n

I noticed the exchange only briefly before returning my attention to my daughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook at Mr. Buzz,\u201d I said, raising the small stuffed airplane she had been gripping since takeoff. \u201cHe\u2019s flying with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emma\u2019s whimper became quieter.<\/p>\n

Approximately ninety minutes into the flight, the public-address system crackled above us.<\/p>\n

The captain\u2019s voice filled the cabin.<\/p>\n

There was something unusual in his delivery.<\/p>\n

It was calm and measured, yet deliberately formal.<\/p>\n
