Patricia quickly recovered and began slicing her cake with theatrical movements. She served Mark the largest piece, then moved around the table while everyone praised the bakery. When I stood to collect the dinner plates, she caught my eye and silently mouthed two words: **Good sport**.<\/p>\n

Her pitying smile made me feel like a child who had tried hard and failed.<\/p>\n

I turned toward the refrigerator, but before I could open it, Patricia lifted her wineglass again.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore everyone becomes too full, I must tell the story,\u201d she said. \u201cYou all know the one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several relatives laughed because they did know it.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandma Rosalind\u2019s honey walnut cake,\u201d Patricia began dramatically. \u201cMy mother\u2019s masterpiece. Sadly, the recipe disappeared when she died. I searched everywhere and tried for twenty years to recreate it, but even I could not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she pointed her fork toward me.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd our hostess probably couldn\u2019t tell a walnut from a peanut. Some traditions are inherited. Some people simply aren\u2019t born into them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The family laughed again.<\/p>\n

For one moment, I considered leaving my cake hidden. I could smile, clear the dishes, and allow Patricia to enjoy another victory. That was what I had done for fifteen years.<\/p>\n

I looked at Mark, but he would not meet my eyes.<\/p>\n

Then I looked at Harold. He was watching silently, waiting to see what I would choose.<\/p>\n

I remembered every Christmas when Patricia mocked me while I cleaned the kitchen, every dinner when Mark comforted me privately but remained silent publicly, and every insult I had swallowed to keep the family comfortable.<\/p>\n

I straightened my shoulders.<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, Patricia, I think this is the perfect time to serve my cake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all full,\u201d she replied quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI insist.\u201d<\/p>\n

I entered the kitchen and removed Rosalind\u2019s old glass cake stand from the pantry. Years earlier, Patricia had given it to Mark while joking that nothing baked in our home would ever deserve to be displayed on it.<\/p>\n

I lifted the honey walnut cake from its plain box and placed it on the stand. The three golden layers glistened beneath the amber glaze, with candied walnut halves arranged across the top.<\/p>\n

When I carried it into the dining room, Patricia initially wore her usual condescending expression.<\/p>\n

Then she saw the stand.<\/p>\n

Her eyes moved to the cake, and the color drained from her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is that?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

I placed it in the center of the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Grandma Rosalind\u2019s honey walnut cake.\u201d<\/p>\n

A murmur passed through the room. Harold carefully put down his fork.<\/p>\n

Patricia forced a laugh. \u201cThat\u2019s impossible. The recipe was lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said calmly. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI searched Mama\u2019s entire house. She took it with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know you searched.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at the cake as if it were dangerous.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen where did you get it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone in this family gave it to me four months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia slowly turned toward her husband.<\/p>\n

\u201cHarold?\u201d<\/p>\n

He stood and approached the cake, touching the glass stand with trembling fingers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks exactly like hers,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou couldn\u2019t have given her the recipe,\u201d Patricia said.<\/p>\n

Harold finally met her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could,\u201d he replied. \u201cAnd I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

The relatives who had laughed moments earlier suddenly became very interested in their plates.<\/p>\n
