I believed meeting my fianc\u00e9\u2019s parents would simply be another step toward the life we were building together. Instead, one disastrous dinner exposed the truth about Richard\u2019s world. By the end of the evening, I knew I had no choice but to cancel the wedding.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I never imagined I would become the kind of person who called off her own wedding. But life has a way of forcing you into decisions you never thought you would face.<\/p>\n

Usually, when something important happens, I talk it through with my friends and family before making up my mind. I like hearing the opinions of people I trust.<\/p>\n

After what happened at that restaurant, I knew the wedding had to be canceled.<\/p>\n

Before I explain that night, I should tell you a little about Richard.<\/p>\n

We met at work when he joined the accounting department as a junior executive. I cannot say exactly what attracted me to him, but there was something about him that caught my attention immediately.<\/p>\n

Richard was undeniably handsome.<\/p>\n

He was tall, had stylish hair, a warm smile, and an easy sense of humor. He quickly became popular around the office, and before long, we were talking during coffee breaks.<\/p>\n

About seven weeks after he started working there, we began dating.<\/p>\n

I quickly became convinced he was everything I wanted in a partner. He seemed confident, considerate, responsible, and good at solving problems.<\/p>\n

Exactly the kind of man a clumsy woman like me thought she needed.<\/p>\n

Our relationship progressed quickly.<\/p>\n

Far too quickly, looking back.<\/p>\n

Richard proposed only six months after we began dating. I was so swept up in the romance that I accepted without hesitation.<\/p>\n

Everything about him appeared perfect except for one detail.<\/p>\n

I had never met his parents.<\/p>\n

They lived in another state, and Richard always seemed to have a reason why we could not visit them. Once they learned about our engagement, however, they insisted on meeting me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going to love you,\u201d Richard assured me, squeezing my hand. \u201cI\u2019ve booked us a table at that fancy new place downtown for Friday night.\u201d<\/p>\n

I spent the following days panicking.<\/p>\n

What should I wear?<\/p>\n

What if they disliked me?<\/p>\n

What if they told Richard to leave me?<\/p>\n

I must have tried on nearly twelve outfits before settling on a classic black dress. I wanted to appear polished without looking as though I had tried too hard.<\/p>\n
