I wanted everything to feel understated but perfect.<\/p>\n

Richard arrived soon afterward to pick me up.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look gorgeous, babe!\u201d he said, giving me the smile I loved. \u201cReady?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded, trying to calm myself. \u201cI really hope they like me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey will, babe,\u201d he held my hand. \u201cAfter all, you\u2019ve got everything that a parent would want to see in their child\u2019s partner. You\u2019re amazing inside out.\u201d<\/p>\n

His reassurance helped a little.<\/p>\n

But nothing could have prepared me for the scene that followed.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, we entered the restaurant.<\/p>\n

It was beautiful.<\/p>\n

Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, soft piano music filled the room, and even the water glasses looked expensive.<\/p>\n

Richard\u2019s parents were seated near a window.<\/p>\n

His mother, Isabella, was a small woman with perfectly styled hair. She stood as we approached. His father, Daniel, looked stern and remained in his chair.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Richard!\u201d his mother cooed as we approached her, completely ignoring me.<\/p>\n

She pulled him into a tight embrace, then held him at arm\u2019s length.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look so weak. Have you lost weight? Are you eating enough?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood beside them awkwardly until Richard finally seemed to remember I existed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, Dad, this is Clara, my fianc\u00e9e.\u201d<\/p>\n

Isabella looked me over from head to toe.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh yes, hello dear,\u201d she gave a smile that was not quite reaching her eyes.<\/p>\n

Daniel responded with only a grunt.<\/p>\n

Once we sat down, I tried to begin a polite conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so nice to finally meet you both. Richard has told me so much about you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before either of them could respond, the waiter arrived with the menus.<\/p>\n

As we looked through them, I noticed Isabella leaning closer to Richard.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, sweetie,\u201d she said in a loud whisper, \u201cdo you want Mommy to order for you? I know how you get overwhelmed with too many choices.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at them.<\/p>\n

Richard was thirty years old, yet she spoke to him as though he were a small child.<\/p>\n

I expected him to object.<\/p>\n

Instead, he nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks, Mom,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know what I like.\u201d<\/p>\n

I attempted to catch his eye, but his attention remained fixed on his mother.<\/p>\n

She ordered some of the most expensive items available for the two of them.<\/p>\n

Lobster.<\/p>\n

Prime rib.<\/p>\n

A two-hundred-dollar bottle of wine.<\/p>\n

When my turn came, I chose a basic pasta dish. By then, I was too unsettled to feel hungry.<\/p>\n

While we waited for the food, Daniel finally spoke directly to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, Clara,\u201d he said, his voice gruff. \u201cWhat are your intentions with our son?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly choked on my water.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you\u2019re planning to marry him, aren\u2019t you? How do you plan to take care of him? You know he needs his clothes ironed just so, and he can\u2019t sleep without his special pillow.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward Richard, expecting him to interrupt and tell his father the question was inappropriate.<\/p>\n

He remained silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2026 uhh\u2026\u201d I stammered. \u201cWe haven\u2019t really discussed those details yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, you\u2019ll need to learn quickly dear,\u201d Isabella intervened. \u201cOur Richie is very particular. He needs dinner by exactly 6 p.m. every day, and don\u2019t even think about serving him vegetables. He won\u2019t touch them.\u201d<\/p>\n

I could barely understand what I was hearing.<\/p>\n

I had agreed to marry a grown man.<\/p>\n

I had not agreed to become his caretaker.<\/p>\n

Why was Richard allowing them to speak about him like this?<\/p>\n

Why was he not embarrassed?<\/p>\n

Why had he never warned me?<\/p>\n

The waiter arrived with our meals, temporarily rescuing me from having to respond.<\/p>\n

But the situation only grew stranger.<\/p>\n
