I looked toward Richard, silently asking him to say something.<\/p>\n

Surely, this time he would defend me.<\/p>\n

Surely, he would explain how unreasonable the demand was.<\/p>\n

Instead, he sat there avoiding my eyes.<\/p>\n

In that moment, everything became clear.<\/p>\n

The issue was not the bill.<\/p>\n

It was the future waiting for me if I married him.<\/p>\n

I would not only be marrying Richard.<\/p>\n

I would be marrying his parents, their expectations, and his complete refusal to stand up to them.<\/p>\n

I took a slow breath and rose from my chair.<\/p>\n

Of course it hurt.<\/p>\n

Of course returning to work would be uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

But I knew I had made the right decision.<\/p>\n

As the store employee processed the refund, she asked whether everything was all right.<\/p>\n

I smiled, feeling lighter than I had in months.<\/p>\n
