Elliot sighed repeatedly and gripped the steering wheel as if spending time with grieving children were a punishment. In the back seat, the twins whispered excitedly about roller coasters and cotton candy.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we almost there?\u201d one asked.<\/p>\n

Elliot frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you make them be quiet? I have a headache.\u201d<\/p>\n

I ignored him and smiled at my brothers.<\/p>\n

When we arrived, the boys raced toward the colorful rides. Music filled the air, popcorn scented the warm afternoon, and flashing lights stretched across the fairground.<\/p>\n

Elliot followed several steps behind us, staring at his phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe boys want to try that ride,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou deal with it. That\u2019s the point of today, isn\u2019t it? One final day before you fix this mess.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word \u201cmess\u201d settled heavily inside me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right. Today is about fixing things.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the next hour, I rode the carousel with the twins, bought them matching light-up toys, and watched them share a funnel cake. Every time they laughed, Elliot checked his watch.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much longer? I have plans tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot much longer.\u201d<\/p>\n

We eventually reached a photography booth decorated with painted sunflowers.<\/p>\n

A cheerful woman waved at us.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome take a family picture! The first one is free.\u201d<\/p>\n

The twins immediately pulled at my sleeves.<\/p>\n

\u201cPicture! Picture!\u201d<\/p>\n

Elliot dismissed the woman.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, thanks.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d love one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elliot spun around.<\/p>\n

\u201cI already said no.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard you. But you don\u2019t have to be in the photograph because you won\u2019t be part of our family after today.\u201d<\/p>\n

The photographer froze.<\/p>\n

Elliot\u2019s mouth dropped open.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was our final family trip, but not in the way you expected. It is your last day with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face turned red.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this a joke?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You demanded that I choose between you and my brothers. I chose them the moment you suggested foster care.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stepped closer and lowered his voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou dragged me across town just to humiliate me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Several people nearby stopped to watch.<\/p>\n

I placed one hand on each twin\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything is okay. We\u2019re taking a special picture, just the three of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elliot laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll regret this. No man will want you with two children attached.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen it\u2019s fortunate that I want myself, and I want them. That is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Someone nearby laughed.<\/p>\n

A teenager whispered,<\/p>\n

\u201cShe destroyed him.\u201d<\/p>\n

A man raised his phone and began recording.<\/p>\n

Elliot suddenly shouted,<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are ending our engagement because of someone else\u2019s children?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are my brothers!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I asked was for you to put them in foster care. You\u2019re really choosing them over me?\u201d<\/p>\n

The crowd reacted immediately.<\/p>\n

A woman gasped.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid he just suggest foster care for those little boys?\u201d<\/p>\n

An older man stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should be ashamed. Their parents are gone, and you\u2019re screaming because their sister refuses to abandon them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another woman called out,<\/p>\n

\u201cYou escaped a terrible marriage, honey!\u201d<\/p>\n

Elliot turned desperately toward the crowd.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t understand! She tricked me!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSounds like she needed to,\u201d a young mother replied.<\/p>\n

He searched for sympathy but found none.<\/p>\n
