I carried the key in my purse during the rehearsal and tucked it beneath my bouquet during the ceremony.<\/p>\n

Something about that small, ordinary key bothered me more than Walter\u2019s missing fortune.<\/p>\n

Halfway through our vows, Walter reached for the microphone.<\/p>\n

The ballroom became silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy bride does not know one very important detail about my fortune,\u201d he announced.<\/p>\n

My hands tightened around the bouquet.<\/p>\n

He handed me a leather portfolio.<\/p>\n

Hope immediately returned.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it contained property deeds, trust documents, or maps showing several private islands.<\/p>\n

Attend retirement dinners.<\/p>\n

Serve in community kitchens.<\/p>\n

Mentor apprentices.<\/p>\n

Read customer letters.<\/p>\n

Visit the original family bakery every month.<\/p>\n

I looked up at Walter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen do I receive the mansion?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter you understand why it was built.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guests laughed.<\/p>\n

Even my father.<\/p>\n

I flipped through the pages.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about the yacht?\u201d<\/p>\n

Walter directed me to the final appendix.<\/p>\n

One sentence appeared in bold:<\/p>\n

There is no yacht.<\/p>\n

The laughter became louder.<\/p>\n

Walter explained that his grandfather had built the family business from a rented bakery kitchen. The fortune now belonged to a trust, and each generation was allowed to manage it only while following the charter.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoney can construct buildings,\u201d Walter said. \u201cOnly people can build a family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo this was a test?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. I hoped you would discover that some things are worth more than money.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Bentley had been donated to a technical school, where students were rebuilding it.<\/p>\n

The investment accounts had been moved into the trust.<\/p>\n

The mansion\u2019s west wing was being converted into housing for retired employees.<\/p>\n

Then I remembered the suit.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about the eight hundred dollars you borrowed?\u201d<\/p>\n

Walter leaned closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the only test I could not resist.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe suit cost eight hundred?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSix hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n

He handed me the remaining two hundred dollars.<\/p>\n

The minister coughed to hide his laughter.<\/p>\n

I should have walked away.<\/p>\n

Instead, I looked at the man who had cooked soup with me, listened to every ridiculous dream I had ever shared, and allowed me to discover who he was after the luxury disappeared.<\/p>\n
