Dennis walked out of the living room and gave him a light pat on the shoulder. \u201cGood to see you, Greg.\u201d<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u201cYeah, you too,\u201d Greg replied, although his attention had already returned to his screen.<\/p>\n

I saw Sally look toward him, then quickly away.<\/p>\n

I noticed far too much.<\/p>\n

Mothers always do.<\/p>\n

We recognize when our daughters grow quieter as someone enters the room. We hear when their laughter becomes smaller. We notice when they apologize for things they did not cause.<\/p>\n

But noticing a problem and knowing how to act on it are not the same thing.<\/p>\n

Dinner began at five.<\/p>\n

We sat around the table together: Sally, Emmy, Dennis, Greg, and me.<\/p>\n

I had brought out the good plates, the ones decorated with tiny blue flowers along the edges.<\/p>\n

Emmy insisted on folding the napkins. Each one resembled a crumpled fan, but I praised them as though they belonged in a luxury hotel.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re all fancy because you made them,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n

Sally gave a genuine smile then.<\/p>\n

It was small, but real.<\/p>\n

At first, dinner seemed almost normal.<\/p>\n

Emmy told us an elaborate story about a boy at school who had placed a glue stick in his pocket and forgotten it was there.<\/p>\n

Dennis laughed in all the right places.<\/p>\n

I asked Sally about the community-center program she had mentioned wanting to join.<\/p>\n

She said she was considering it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe next week,\u201d she murmured.<\/p>\n

Greg gave a soft snort.<\/p>\n

Sally\u2019s shoulders immediately tightened.<\/p>\n

He shrugged while cutting into his chicken. \u201cNo. Just that she always says next week.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sally\u2019s fork stopped halfway to her mouth.<\/p>\n

I felt Dennis shift beside me.<\/p>\n

I wanted to respond.<\/p>\n

I wanted to ask Greg when he had become the kind of man who used another person\u2019s hope as a punch line.<\/p>\n

But Sally gave me the smallest shake of her head, so quick that I might have missed it if I had blinked.<\/p>\n

Once again, I swallowed my words.<\/p>\n

That was the danger of always trying to preserve peace.<\/p>\n

Sometimes peace was simply silence dressed in good manners.<\/p>\n

I watched Sally throughout the meal.<\/p>\n

She ate slowly, praised the potatoes twice, and helped Emmy cut her chicken into smaller pieces.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been helping with inventory at the shop,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not exciting, but it keeps me busy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBusy is good,\u201d Greg said. \u201cBetter than sitting around feeling sorry for yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The atmosphere changed after that.<\/p>\n

Nothing loud happened.<\/p>\n

No glass shattered.<\/p>\n

Still, the air around the table tightened.<\/p>\n

Sally lowered her gaze to her plate.<\/p>\n

Sweet little Emmy looked from one parent to the other and whispered, \u201cDaddy, that\u2019s not nice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg laughed. \u201cRelax, Em. Grown-ups can joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed my water glass on the table. \u201cNot every unkind thing becomes a joke just because someone laughs afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes shifted toward me.<\/p>\n

For a second, his smile became thin.<\/p>\n

Then he leaned back and lifted both hands.<\/p>\n

Dennis looked at me, and I understood his expression as clearly as if he had spoken.<\/p>\n

He was angry.<\/p>\n

But he was waiting for me.<\/p>\n

Everyone at that table always waited for me because I was the person who decided whether a moment became a confrontation or disappeared beneath another helping of potatoes.<\/p>\n

So I brought out dessert.<\/p>\n

I convinced myself it might help.<\/p>\n

Chocolate had once made Sally happy.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it still could.<\/p>\n

Maybe one piece of cake could remind her that she was allowed to want something, enjoy it, and exist comfortably in her own body without someone monitoring every bite.<\/p>\n

I carried the chocolate fudge cake into the dining room with both hands.<\/p>\n

Emmy gasped as though I had brought out a treasure chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe very one,\u201d I said, setting it in the middle of the table.<\/p>\n

Sally\u2019s expression softened. \u201cYou made my favorite.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course I did.\u201d<\/p>\n
