Celeste gave a thin, brittle laugh. \u201cElena always loved drama. Daniel left because she was unstable.\u201d<\/p>\n

There it was.<\/p>\n

The same old weapon.<\/p>\n

During our marriage, every objection became hysteria. Every question became jealousy. Even at Daniel\u2019s funeral, Celeste told relatives I was too emotionally fragile to manage finances.<\/p>\n

Sophie looked from the wedding ring I still wore on a chain to Daniel\u2019s face. \u201cYou said your first wife died.\u201d<\/p>\n

She had overlooked one fact.<\/p>\n

Trauma had taught me to document every doorway before stepping through it.<\/p>\n

That admission struck harder than any physical blow.<\/p>\n

Only Daniel had access to those records, yet Celeste had quoted from them during the estate lawsuit. They had not simply planned his disappearance.<\/p>\n

They had prepared to destroy my credibility if I questioned his death.<\/p>\n

I sent a message to Marcus Vale, my former supervisor:<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s expression went blank.<\/p>\n

Years earlier, suspicious of the sealed coffin and the rushed death certificate, I had refused to use the life-insurance money. Rachel placed it in escrow and preserved the entire estate record.<\/p>\n

People mocked me for refusing to move on.<\/p>\n

That caution had now become a loaded weapon.<\/p>\n

Sophie began crying. \u201cDaniel\u2014David\u2014what did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned toward her. \u201cI did it for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Celeste snapped, \u201cDo not speak.\u201d<\/p>\n

But panic had already made him reckless.<\/p>\n
