At 39 weeks pregnant, I was breathing through contractions while my husband packed an overnight bag so his mother could take him home to \u201crest before the baby came.\u201d By the next morning, she was texting me in all caps\u2026 and suddenly nobody was talking about Jake\u2019s sleep anymore.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The first thing Jake carried out was his overnight bag.<\/p>\n

The second was the pillow Brenda claimed he needed because hers were \u201cbetter for his neck.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood in the laundry room doorway with one hand supporting my stomach, watching my husband prepare to spend the weekend elsewhere while piles of unfolded baby socks sat behind me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour ankles are enormous,\u201d Brenda said, as if pregnancy had just been explained to her. \u201cYou should sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had been trying to sit for the past twenty minutes.<\/p>\n

Each time I lowered myself, I noticed another pair of tiny pajamas waiting to be folded, or the hospital bag reminded me that the baby carrier was still sealed inside its box.<\/p>\n

Jake yawned from the couch.<\/p>\n

Brenda immediately turned toward him.<\/p>\n

He was thirty-one.<\/p>\n

I was thirty-nine weeks pregnant with a baby who seemed determined to kick through my ribs.<\/p>\n

Still, Brenda crossed the room and pressed the back of her hand against Jake\u2019s forehead.<\/p>\n

He gave me a small, apologetic smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t slept well, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neither had I.<\/p>\n

The difference was that no one was packing a special pillow for me.<\/p>\n

Brenda had let herself in with her spare key fifteen minutes earlier, carrying chicken soup and the certainty that every problem in our marriage could be fixed by removing Jake from it.<\/p>\n

She had been doing the same thing for years.<\/p>\n

When our washing machine flooded, she called a repairman before Jake reached the shutoff valve.<\/p>\n

When tax forms overwhelmed him, she arrived with every document already completed.<\/p>\n

When we moved, she assembled our bedroom furniture while Jake brought drinks and told everyone she was \u201cjust faster.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had always called it generosity.<\/p>\n

Then I became pregnant.<\/p>\n

Jake skipped the infant safety class because the chairs hurt his back.<\/p>\n

He delayed building the crib because the instructions looked complicated.<\/p>\n

He left the baby monitor unopened because we supposedly had \u201cplenty of time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whenever I reminded him, he nodded, kissed my forehead, and promised he would do it tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Tomorrow had become the fullest room in our home.<\/p>\n

Now Brenda stood by the front door holding his coat.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am taking him home for the weekend,\u201d she announced. \u201cHe needs proper rest before the baby arrives.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Jake.<\/p>\n

Another contraction tightened beneath my ribs. It was not strong enough to send us to the hospital, but it was sharp enough to make me grip the wall.<\/p>\n

His eyes moved toward my hand braced against the doorway.<\/p>\n

For one second, I thought he might lower the bag.<\/p>\n

Instead, he zipped it shut.<\/p>\n
