I sat on the couch and made three phone calls.<\/p>\n

The first was to my obstetrician.<\/p>\n

My contractions were still irregular. She told me to drink water, rest, and contact her again if they grew stronger or closer together.<\/p>\n

The second call was to Bessie next door. She had raised four children and had already offered to drive me if labor began.<\/p>\n

She arrived ten minutes later carrying a stopwatch, crackers, and absolutely no useless advice.<\/p>\n

The third call was to a local moving company.<\/p>\n

At seven the next morning, two movers backed a truck into our driveway.<\/p>\n

By eight, Brenda must have opened her front door.<\/p>\n

Her first message reached me thirty seconds later.<\/p>\n

The rocking chair, stroller, monitor, diaper station, and lamp formed an uneven display across the grass.<\/p>\n

At the center sat the baby carrier, still inside its original packaging.<\/p>\n

A small white tag was attached to every item.<\/p>\n
