I picked up my nine-year-old daughter, Lily, from my parents\u2019 home after returning from a week-long work trip to Europe. It was late Friday night when we reached our small house in Portland, Oregon. She barely spoke during the drive, but I assumed she was exhausted. At the door, my mother had kissed her forehead over and over, while my father stood behind her with folded arms and a smile that never reached his eyes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The next morning, I prepared Lily\u2019s favorite breakfast: scrambled eggs, buttered toast, and strawberries sliced into tiny hearts. Usually, she would laugh and immediately steal the largest strawberry.<\/p>\n

That morning, she only stared at the food.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy aren\u2019t you eating?\u201d I asked gently.<\/p>\n

Her little fingers gripped the edge of the table. Her bottom lip began to shake.<\/p>\n

\u201cAm I in trouble?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

The question struck me so hard I nearly dropped my coffee.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn trouble? Honey, no. Why would you be in trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n

She suddenly broke down.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t a dramatic child\u2019s cry or ordinary whining. It was pure panic spilling out. She shoved the plate away and covered her face as though she expected me to shout.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t mean to tell,\u201d she sobbed. \u201cGrandma said if I told you, you\u2019d be so mad at me. Grandpa said families keep quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach turned to ice.<\/p>\n

I knelt beside her chair. \u201cTell me what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

She shook her head violently. \u201cYou\u2019ll hate me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI could never hate you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily lifted red, terrified eyes toward me. \u201cGrandma took me to a house. A lady was there. She said she was a lawyer. Grandma told me to say I wanted to live with them because you travel too much and don\u2019t love me enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a moment, the kitchen seemed to shift beneath me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe made me practice,\u201d Lily continued, her voice cracking. \u201cShe said if I said it right, a judge would let me stay with them forever. She said you were selfish and maybe you\u2019d send me away someday.\u201d<\/p>\n

I slowly stood.<\/p>\n

My parents had not simply been caring for my daughter.<\/p>\n

They had been preparing to take her away from me.<\/p>\n

Then Lily whispered something that made my blood run even colder.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandpa recorded me crying and told me to say you leave me alone at night. But that\u2019s not true, Mommy. I lied because they scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n
