She nodded. \u201cGrandma said if I didn\u2019t help, you might lose your job and then we\u2019d have nowhere to live. She said she and Grandpa had money and a big house. She said I was being selfish if I wanted to stay with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother, Carolyn, had always needed control. My father, Richard, was quiet in public and cruel behind closed doors. When I was young, they called control \u201clove.\u201d If I cried, I was ungrateful. If I disagreed, I was dramatic. When I moved out at twenty-one, my mother told the family I had abandoned them.<\/p>\n

After Lily was born, I tried to repair the relationship. I wanted her to know her grandparents. I wanted to believe age had softened them.<\/p>\n

I was wrong.<\/p>\n

I settled Lily on the couch with a blanket and cartoons, then stepped into the hallway and called my best friend, Marissa, a family law paralegal.<\/p>\n

The moment she answered, I skipped the greeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think my parents are trying to build a custody case against me.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the call, I checked my phone.<\/p>\n

Six missed calls from my mother and two text messages.<\/p>\n

Carolyn: Lily seemed emotional last night. You need to be patient with her.<\/p>\n

Carolyn: Also, we should talk about what is best for Lily long-term.<\/p>\n

Then another message arrived.<\/p>\n

Carolyn: She told us things you may not want repeated.<\/p>\n

I stared at the words.<\/p>\n

That was not concern.<\/p>\n

It was a threat.<\/p>\n

Across the room, Lily peered at me over her blanket.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy?\u201d<\/p>\n

I forced my expression to soften. \u201cYeah, baby?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre they going to take me?\u201d<\/p>\n

I returned to the couch and held both her hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cNobody is taking you from me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even as I said it, I knew love by itself would not be enough.<\/p>\n

I needed proof.<\/p>\n
