I must have adjusted the place cards six times before forcing myself to stop.<\/p>\n

After a moment, he pushed himself away from the doorframe.<\/p>\n

Once he was gone, I remained alone beneath the soft yellow light and allowed the silence to settle around me.<\/p>\n

I remembered every year I had bitten my tongue at that table.<\/p>\n

I remembered the Thanksgiving when Diane rewrote my seating arrangement on a paper napkin.<\/p>\n

I remembered reaching into her purse one summer for a piece of gum and finding a spare key to my house, still shiny around the edges. She had laughed and said, \u201cOh, Harley had one made for me, don\u2019t be dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n

That key had been sitting in my dresser ever since.<\/p>\n

I had questioned Harley about it once. He had shrugged and behaved as though it meant nothing.<\/p>\n

Two days remained before the driveway would fill with cars, Diane would enter as though her name were on the deed, Harley would offer his relaxed smile, and I would be expected to serve everyone.<\/p>\n

I adjusted the final place card until it aligned perfectly with the plate.<\/p>\n

This year, I promised myself, would finally be under my control.<\/p>\n

I had no idea yet that something unexpected would happen the following morning.<\/p>\n

It was Ryan, standing on the porch with a foil-covered dish balanced in one hand and his familiar crooked smile.<\/p>\n

I opened the door while still holding the bundle of cinnamon sticks I had been arranging for the centerpiece.<\/p>\n

\u201cCranberry orange,\u201d he said, lifting the dish. \u201cMom\u2019s recipe. I\u2019m just the delivery guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a lifesaver. Kitchen counter, please.\u201d<\/p>\n

He walked inside, placed the dish on the counter, and leaned against the island as though he had something difficult to say.<\/p>\n

I noticed immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cMadison,\u201d he said, tapping one finger against the marble. \u201cRandom question. Where are all the extra people supposed to sit?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stopped moving.<\/p>\n

My gaze moved toward the dining room, toward the hand-lettered place cards and the seating plan I had revised three times to ensure Diane sat far enough away from my mother for everyone to survive dinner.<\/p>\n

Ryan watched me.<\/p>\n

He did not appear surprised.<\/p>\n

He looked patient.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn\u2019t call you, did she?\u201d he asked more quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cFigured.\u201d He collected his keys and paused near the door. \u201cFor what it\u2019s worth, I thought you should know before Thursday. Not on Thursday.\u201d<\/p>\n

His tone was light.<\/p>\n
