\u201cDid your mother tell you she invited twenty extra people to our house?\u201d<\/p>\n

He rubbed the back of his neck.<\/p>\n

That gesture.<\/p>\n

Eight years of that gesture.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe mentioned it,\u201d he said. \u201cI figured she\u2019d already talked to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou figured.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMadison, come on. It\u2019s Mom. You know how she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then came the familiar sigh.<\/p>\n

The one that signaled we were about to repeat the same conversation we had endured every holiday since our wedding.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we just get through Thursday?\u201d he asked. \u201cOne day. Please.\u201d<\/p>\n

I studied him for a long moment.<\/p>\n

He mistook my silence for surrender.<\/p>\n

He usually did.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s okay,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Relief loosened his shoulders.<\/p>\n

Later, I remained at the kitchen island until I heard the shower running.<\/p>\n

Then I opened my laptop.<\/p>\n

The restaurant I had in mind was twenty minutes away. It was family-owned, had a private room, and the chef owed me a favor after I had sent him a catering job in the spring.<\/p>\n

I called.<\/p>\n

He answered after the second ring.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not joking. Eight people. Thursday at four. Private room. Full menu. I know it\u2019s insane.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a pause.<\/p>\n

I heard him thinking.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor you? I\u2019ll make it work. But you owe me a Christmas booking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDone.\u201d<\/p>\n

After ending the call, I stared at the ceiling.<\/p>\n

The printer began humming in the corner.<\/p>\n

A single page emerged.<\/p>\n

It held a small, neatly centered sign in elegant black lettering.<\/p>\n

I folded it once and placed it beneath a paperweight on my desk.<\/p>\n

First, I created a short list in my head.<\/p>\n

My parents.<\/p>\n

The four cousins who had, at least once, treated my house as though it belonged to me.<\/p>\n

Harley\u2019s aunt and uncle were Diane\u2019s siblings. They would defend her before the gravy had time to cool.<\/p>\n

I cared about our neighbors, but I could host them properly in December, without an audience.<\/p>\n

Ryan made the list, along with the girlfriend he had been dating since spring.<\/p>\n

Then I opened separate message threads and sent each person the same text.<\/p>\n

\u201cSmall change of plans. Dinner is now at Marchetti\u2019s, private room, four o\u2019clock Thursday. Don\u2019t mention it to Diane. I\u2019ll explain everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

The responses arrived one after another.<\/p>\n

My mother sent one word.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan sent two.<\/p>\n

I lowered my phone and looked around the kitchen.<\/p>\n

The centerpiece I had made.<\/p>\n

The garland I had wrapped around the banister.<\/p>\n

The place cards I had written in gold ink after midnight because I wanted the holiday to be beautiful.<\/p>\n

None of it had been for Diane.<\/p>\n

I finally understood that.<\/p>\n

It had never belonged to her.<\/p>\n

I opened the drawer where we kept spare keys and removed one.<\/p>\n

The key Diane had copied two years earlier without my permission.<\/p>\n

The one Harley had dismissed when I discovered it in her purse.<\/p>\n

I had stored it in that drawer ever since, never knowing what to do with it.<\/p>\n

I placed it on top of the folded sign and pressed my palm against them both.<\/p>\n

Then I closed the laptop, breathed out slowly, and whispered into the empty kitchen.<\/p>\n
