I drove across four states to meet my newborn grandson. But only minutes after I held him, a nurse pulled me aside and whispered something that made my entire body go cold.<\/p>\n

The day should have been one of the happiest of my life.<\/p>\n

Instead, it became the day I discovered how much my son had hidden from me.<\/p>\n

My name is Linda. I am sixty-one years old, and Daniel is my only child. Several years ago, he and his wife, Nora, moved far away because of his job.<\/p>\n

When Daniel called one Sunday evening and announced that they had news, I guessed immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cNora is pregnant?\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed, and I cried with happiness.<\/p>\n

During the following months, I repeatedly offered to visit. I asked whether they needed help decorating the nursery, preparing for the baby shower, or buying supplies.<\/p>\n

Each time, Daniel gently refused.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re fine, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were no pregnancy photographs. Daniel never sent pictures of Nora\u2019s growing stomach. Whenever I asked, he showed me only the nursery, folded clothes, tiny socks, painted walls, and the crib.<\/p>\n

Once, I asked him directly to send me a photograph of Nora.<\/p>\n

After a brief pause, he said she did not feel comfortable being photographed.<\/p>\n

I believed him because I wanted to.<\/p>\n

Then, before sunrise one morning, Daniel called.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s here,\u201d he said, his voice trembling.<\/p>\n

I packed immediately and began the long drive.<\/p>\n

When I entered the hospital room, Nora looked exhausted but happy. Daniel\u2019s eyes were red from crying.<\/p>\n

Then he lifted a newborn from the bassinet and placed him in my arms.<\/p>\n

The baby was beautiful.<\/p>\n

He had dark hair, warm skin, and tiny fingers that curled against my blouse.<\/p>\n

Daniel and Nora laughed as I cried. For one perfect moment, we were simply a family celebrating a new life.<\/p>\n

A nurse stood near the station, writing on a clipboard. I thanked her for taking care of my family and proudly mentioned that Daniel\u2019s baby was my first grandchild.<\/p>\n

She glanced toward the room, then leaned closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat isn\u2019t the baby your son left with,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

She immediately looked frightened.<\/p>\n

Before I could answer, another nurse called her name. She apologized and hurried away.<\/p>\n

I stood frozen in the hallway.<\/p>\n

At first, I convinced myself she had confused Daniel with another father. Hospitals were busy. Nurses were tired. Mistakes happened.<\/p>\n

But when I returned to the room, Daniel smiled too quickly.<\/p>\n

Nora looked at him before asking whether something was wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cEverything is fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

For the next two days, I acted normally while the nurse\u2019s words repeated inside my head.<\/p>\n
