After five minutes, I opened the folder where they had stored the hospital documents.<\/p>\n

I knew searching through their private papers was wrong. But a nurse had made a disturbing statement, and my son had lied directly to my face.<\/p>\n

I needed answers.<\/p>\n

At first, I found nothing unusual.<\/p>\n

Insurance forms.<\/p>\n

Medical instructions.<\/p>\n

Consent documents.<\/p>\n

It explained that the birth carrier had requested private recovery time with the newborn before releasing him to the intended parents.<\/p>\n

My hands began shaking.<\/p>\n

That was why the nurse had said Daniel had left with one baby and returned with another.<\/p>\n

Then the door opened.<\/p>\n

Daniel stopped when he saw the documents in my hands.<\/p>\n

Her voice broke as she spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time I told people I was pregnant, I eventually had to call them and explain that I wasn\u2019t anymore,\u201d she said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t keep doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel said they had become terrified of hope, questions, and sympathy.<\/p>\n

That was why they had chosen surrogacy and kept everything secret.<\/p>\n

I understood their pain, but one question remained.<\/p>\n
