Delaney did not apologize.<\/p>\n

Instead, our mother called and reminded me that weddings were stressful and family members were supposed to help one another.<\/p>\n

When I revealed the total amount I had sent, she became silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cDelaney never told me it was that much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course she didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

I explained what Grandma had overheard.<\/p>\n

For once, Mom had no excuse prepared for my sister.<\/p>\n

Grant called several days later and claimed the conversation had been misunderstood.<\/p>\n

He even suggested that Grandma might have heard it incorrectly.<\/p>\n

\u201cCareful, Grant,\u201d I warned.<\/p>\n

When his polite tone failed, his anger appeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re cutting us off right before our wedding?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou planned a wedding using my salary. That was your decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

The following month, I kept the nine hundred dollars.<\/p>\n

I paid my bills, bought groceries without calculating every item, and purchased a new pair of shoes.<\/p>\n

One of my students looked at me that week and said, \u201cMr. Ward, you seem less tired.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soon, the rest of the family learned the truth.<\/p>\n

At a Sunday gathering, Delaney complained that I had abandoned her. My aunt Ronnie asked how much money I had sent.<\/p>\n

She finally admitted they were struggling.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen how can you do this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause struggling does not give you permission to use people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Days later, Grant appeared outside my school.<\/p>\n

He wanted everything to return to normal.<\/p>\n

But normal meant I sacrificed while they traveled, planned a wedding, and laughed about me.<\/p>\n

\u201cNormal is over,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n

Later, Delaney invited me to a coffee shop and offered what sounded like an apology.<\/p>\n

The words were perfect\u2014too perfect.<\/p>\n

Then the real reason for the meeting appeared.<\/p>\n

They wanted me to co-sign a mortgage refinance because their credit had collapsed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou invited me here to apologize so I would become responsible for your debt?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re family,\u201d Grant snapped.<\/p>\n

I stood.<\/p>\n

I left five dollars beside my untouched coffee.<\/p>\n

The following morning, Grandma called me urgently.<\/p>\n

Delaney and Grant had discovered a family trust created by our late grandfather. Through an attorney, they accused me of secretly influencing Grandma so they would receive less.<\/p>\n

They were willing to damage my reputation because I had stopped financing them.<\/p>\n

But their legal claim quickly collapsed.<\/p>\n

Their attorney withdrew it after discovering they had no evidence.<\/p>\n

Then the rest of their life began falling apart.<\/p>\n

Grant lost his job after irregularities were discovered in his expense reports and client accounts.<\/p>\n

Their refinance was denied.<\/p>\n
