One afternoon, during another infusion, a Make-A-Wish volunteer named Claire sat beside his hospital bed. She wore green sneakers and held a folder decorated with stars.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u201cIf you could go anywhere,\u201d she asked my son, \u201cwhere would you go?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike answered immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisneyland!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy Disneyland?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at the clear medicine dripping into his arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause nobody is allowed to be sick there. Only happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Claire managed to keep smiling.<\/p>\n

I could not.<\/p>\n

A month later, she called.<\/p>\n

His wish had been approved.<\/p>\n

We did not tell Mike until the tickets arrived because Stella and I had learned to handle hope carefully. We had watched too many plans vanish after a bad scan.<\/p>\n

When we finally showed him the tickets, he read the destination twice.<\/p>\n

Then he whispered, \u201cAll three of us?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll three,\u201d Stella said.<\/p>\n

He pressed the tickets against his chest.<\/p>\n

That was how we ended up in seat 12A.<\/p>\n

\u2014<\/p>\n

Mike sat by the window. Stella took the middle seat, and I sat on the aisle, pretending not to notice how often she checked the color of his face.<\/p>\n

A flight attendant named Dana brought him apple juice in a plastic cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo pilots really say \u2018roger\u2019?\u201d Mike asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo they have keys?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll ask,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan airplanes get tired?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dana glanced toward me before answering. \u201cNot when they know where they\u2019re going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike smiled.<\/p>\n

Then the captain\u2019s voice came through the speakers.<\/p>\n

\u201cLadies and gentlemen, this is Captain Harris. We are cruising at thirty-five thousand feet and expect a smooth flight into Los Angeles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike looked disappointed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t say \u2018roger.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The captain continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also have a special guest with us today. Mike, in seat 12A, I hope you\u2019re enjoying your trip so far.\u201d<\/p>\n

My son froze with the straw still between his lips.<\/p>\n

Passengers began turning toward us.<\/p>\n

Mike lowered the cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe knows my seat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dana stood near the front galley, smiling.<\/p>\n

Captain Harris continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cMike, before we land, there is one thing about this trip that you and your parents know nothing about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stella\u2019s fingers tightened around mine.<\/p>\n

I looked toward Dana, but her expression revealed nothing.<\/p>\n

The seat belt sign was off, yet the entire cabin became still.<\/p>\n

\u201cPassengers, please reach beneath your seat. You will find a small folded paper tucked into the life vest pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n

People leaned forward.<\/p>\n

The sound of rustling paper moved through the plane.<\/p>\n

I reached beneath my seat and found a square piece of white cardstock.<\/p>\n

Someone had drawn a blue crayon airplane across the front. One wing was larger than the other, and three round windows floated above the body.<\/p>\n
