I believed surviving a difficult delivery would be the greatest challenge of my life. I had no idea the real horror would start only after I opened my eyes.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

At 38 weeks pregnant, I couldn\u2019t pass the nursery without smiling. My pregnancy had gone perfectly. Two strong heartbeats, two flawless scans, and two names carefully embroidered onto matching baby blankets my sister, Rachel, had made.<\/p>\n

I was a graphic designer on maternity leave, and our quiet suburban house felt like it was waiting alongside us.<\/p>\n

My husband, Ryan, worked in finance and, by all appearances, was the perfect father-to-be. He massaged my feet every evening. He finally put together the second crib one Saturday in April after I\u2019d reminded him for three straight weeks. He did it with a tense expression, like he was balancing spreadsheets instead of building furniture.<\/p>\n

Everyone kept telling me how lucky I was.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou picked a good one,\u201d Rachel said during one phone call.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d I told her. \u201cI really did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even so, there were little things I noticed before convincing myself they meant nothing.<\/p>\n

Ryan spent long stretches talking on the phone in the garage\u2014sometimes 40 minutes, sometimes over an hour. Whenever I asked who it was, he simply waved the question away.<\/p>\n

The topic of baby names came up one Sunday while I folded tiny onesies on the couch.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, Noah and Caleb,\u201d I said. \u201cYou still love both, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCaleb\u2019s great,\u201d my husband replied without looking up from his phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Noah?\u201d<\/p>\n

He glanced at me, then back at the screen. \u201cYeah. Sure. Whatever you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

I convinced myself he was just stressed, that men in finance handled major life changes strangely, and plenty of other excuses back then.<\/p>\n

One evening, I noticed Ryan watching my belly from across the kitchen with an expression I couldn\u2019t explain. I decided it was wonder.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d I laughed. \u201cDo I have spaghetti sauce on my shirt?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re just really pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband smiled, but his eyes stayed cold. I filed it away as pregnancy anxiety and ignored it.<\/p>\n

Rachel called the next morning, just like she always did.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow are my nephews?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood. That\u2019s a healthy sign,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

My sister paused. \u201cWeird how?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know. Distant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEve, if anything ever feels off, you call me. Any hour.\u201d<\/p>\n
