I was still laughing about that conversation two days later while rinsing a coffee mug at the kitchen sink, 38 weeks and one day pregnant.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The pain struck without warning.<\/p>\n

It tore through my stomach and dropped me to my knees before I could grab the counter. My face slammed against the tile floor. I couldn\u2019t breathe.<\/p>\n

I heard Ryan rushing over, then dialing 911.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I need an ambulance.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband slowly gave our address. His voice never trembled.<\/p>\n

Even through the blinding pain, I remember thinking he sounded like he was placing a food order.<\/p>\n

Minutes later, I was inside an ambulance.<\/p>\n

Then everything disappeared.<\/p>\n

I woke up three days later beneath an unfamiliar ceiling, every inch of my body aching. Even breathing hurt. My mouth tasted like metal. A monitor beeped steadily somewhere beside me.<\/p>\n

Ryan sat next to the bed, gripping my hand as though it were the only thing keeping him standing.<\/p>\n

The moment he saw my eyes open, his face collapsed.<\/p>\n

\u201cEve\u2026 Oh God, Eve!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d My voice was barely a whisper.<\/p>\n

My husband rested his forehead against my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so sorry,\u201d he whispered. \u201cThey couldn\u2019t save one of the boys.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room spun. I stared at him, unable to form a sentence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n

He tightened his grip.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctors tried everything, honey. We should focus on the son we still have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he buried his face against my shoulder and cried. I cried too because I had no idea what else anyone could do after losing half of the life she\u2019d carried for nine months.<\/p>\n

We named our surviving son Caleb, just as I\u2019d always hoped. Ryan agreed without hesitation, almost as if the choice had already been made.<\/p>\n

For the next two days, Ryan hardly left my side.<\/p>\n

He brought roses from the grocery store, gave me ice chips, adjusted my pillows, ran his fingers through my hair, and told everyone who entered that I was the strongest woman he\u2019d ever known.<\/p>\n

The nurses adored Ryan.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got a good one,\u201d one nurse said while checking my IV. \u201cI wish my husband had been half that attentive. Yours is an incredible husband and father.\u201d<\/p>\n

I believed every word.<\/p>\n

But there were little cracks I couldn\u2019t quite ignore.<\/p>\n

Whenever I asked about the paperwork, Ryan simply waved his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to see the file. I want to know what happened,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEve.\u201d My husband\u2019s voice was gentle and calm, the way you\u2019d comfort a child. \u201cYou just woke up. Focus on getting better.\u201d<\/p>\n

I noticed he avoided looking at one particular nurse who came in to check my vitals, a woman with short gray hair and a name tag I couldn\u2019t make out from across the room. She noticed it too. I could tell.<\/p>\n

Later, when I asked Ryan exactly what the doctors had said in the operating room (OR), whether they\u2019d attempted the second procedure, his jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you doing this to yourself?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to understand,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing to understand,\u201d he replied. \u201cIt happened. Please stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I did. I was too exhausted to keep pushing.<\/p>\n

The next morning, the NICU approved Caleb to stay in my room.<\/p>\n

The gray-haired nurse brought him in herself.<\/p>\n

This time I caught her name tag. Diana.<\/p>\n

She smiled at Ryan.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongratulations,\u201d she said warmly.<\/p>\n

He smiled back.<\/p>\n

Then she leaned over the bassinet as though fixing Caleb\u2019s blanket, positioning herself so Ryan couldn\u2019t see her lips.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t react,\u201d she whispered. \u201cJust smile.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled. Somehow, I managed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour husband was pacing outside the OR, saying things he never should have said. I secretly recorded him on my phone. I just AirDropped the video to your phone number from your file.\u201d<\/p>\n
