Julian Whitaker looked at me as though I were nothing more than an outdated chair his father had forgotten to throw away. After eighteen years of caring for Mr. Whitaker, Julian dismissed me with four hundred dollars and ordered me off the property before sunset. Three days later, his father\u2019s attorney called, and what he revealed nearly made me collapse. That morning, sunlight poured through the tall windows of the Whitaker estate as I placed fresh lilies on the hallway table.<\/p>\n

Mr. Whitaker had always wanted flowers in the house, and without him, the mansion felt painfully empty. I had begun working for him nearly two decades earlier, when he was already a widower. Somewhere along the way, we had become an unusual family of two. When my daughter died, he sat quietly beside me on the kitchen bench. He did not offer advice or empty comfort. He simply remained there because he understood that sometimes grief needed company, not words. Every Monday, he asked about my grandson.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow is Danny, Marta? Is he still drawing those spaceships?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is, sir. Now he adds aliens.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood. Tell him I want to see one.\u201d<\/p>\n

A week before Mr. Whitaker died, Danny drew him a rocket surrounded by green aliens. Mr. Whitaker taped it to the refrigerator himself. I was remembering that moment when the front door slammed and Julian entered the foyer. I had met Mr. Whitaker\u2019s son only a few times during eighteen years. His father used to sit near the telephone every Sunday evening, waiting for calls that almost never came. Julian glanced at me without recognition.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Mary, isn\u2019t it? Or Mara?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMarta, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRight. I\u2019ve been reviewing my father\u2019s affairs. Meet me in the study in ten minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He walked away before I could respond. Mr. Whitaker had once promised that I would always be cared for, but I had assumed he was merely comforting an aging housekeeper. I straightened my apron and entered the study, where Julian stood behind his father\u2019s desk, tapping a white envelope against his palm.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be brief. We no longer require your services.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t understand. Your father said I would always have a place here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

His words struck harder than I expected. He pushed the envelope across the desk.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are four hundred dollars inside. One week of severance. More than most housekeepers would receive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy position?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are an employee, Marta, not family. I want you gone by sundown.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eighteen years of meals, medicine, lonely holidays, and late-night conversations had been reduced to four hundred dollars. I asked whether I could take the small radio I kept in the pantry. Julian said I could remove anything that truly belonged to me. Near the window hung a framed photograph of the mansion at sunset. Mr. Whitaker had given it to me years earlier.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told me I could have that picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Julian barely looked at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat cheap thing? Take it and leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pressed the frame against my chest, unaware that it contained the one thing that would protect me. Upstairs, I folded my apron, packed the radio, and wrapped the photograph in a dish towel. Miguel, the gardener, saw me leaving through the side door.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo my daughter\u2019s house. Julian dismissed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe can\u2019t do that. Mr. Whitaker promised\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

Miguel stopped abruptly, as though he had nearly revealed something. I told him Julian could do whatever he wished now and boarded the bus. Forty minutes later, I arrived at my daughter\u2019s apartment. Danny was completing his homework at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbuela, why are you home on a Tuesday?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m tired, mijo. Finish your math.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you all right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will be.\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed the photograph on the windowsill and began thinking about finding another job.<\/p>\n
