PART 2: THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING<\/strong><\/h1>\n

For three days, I contacted every family I had worked for before joining the Whitaker household. Most did not remember me. Two politely explained that they had no vacancies. By the third evening, I sat at the kitchen table without touching my dinner. Danny had gone to bed early, sensing the worry I was trying to hide. The photograph caught the last light of sunset, reminding me of the afternoon Mr. Whitaker had placed it in my hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeep this, Marta, so you will always remember this house.\u201d<\/p>\n

The telephone rang. I allowed it to ring three times before answering.<\/p>\n

\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this Marta?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy name is Nathaniel. I represented Mr. Whitaker. Before I continue, please sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n

I lowered myself into a chair and stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Whitaker changed his will four months before his death. He left you the entire estate\u2014the mansion, the surrounding land, and a trust for your grandson\u2019s education.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat cannot be correct. Julian said the estate belonged to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJulian was disinherited. His father documented years of neglect and financial pressure. The signed documents are in my office.\u201d<\/p>\n

My hand tightened around the edge of the table. As Nathaniel continued explaining, I picked up the frame and ran my thumb along its wooden backing. One corner felt loose. After the call, I turned it over and lifted the cardboard. A folded letter slipped onto the table. My name was written across it in Mr. Whitaker\u2019s shaky handwriting.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, sir. What did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

I read the letter three times before pressing it against my chest and crying. Nathaniel had told the truth. Mr. Whitaker had carefully planned everything. That same evening, someone pounded on our apartment door. Julian stood in the hallway wearing an expensive coat that looked absurd against the peeling wallpaper.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is nothing to discuss.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father\u2019s attorney contacted me. Apparently, there is confusion regarding the estate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe contacted me too. He did not sound confused.\u201d<\/p>\n

Julian\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m prepared to be generous. I\u2019ll give you ten thousand dollars if you sign a waiver today.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old version of me might have accepted the money out of fear and gratitude. But the words in Mr. Whitaker\u2019s letter had changed something inside me.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExcuse me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father\u2019s wishes were clear. I will not sign anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are a housekeeper. My lawyers can keep you in court for years. You\u2019ll spend every cent you own before this reaches a judge.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I will spend it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Julian stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have no idea whom you are challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew your father for eighteen years. I cooked for him when he was ill and sat beside him when he was frightened. Where were you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is none of your business.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was his business, and he documented it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uncertainty crossed Julian\u2019s face before he hid it.<\/p>\n

\u201cFifteen thousand. Final offer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want a formal meeting at Nathaniel\u2019s office. Bring every lawyer you have.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will regret this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps. But I will regret it while standing up.\u201d<\/p>\n

After he left, my legs finally began shaking. The next morning, I would enter Nathaniel\u2019s office, but I would not enter alone. I would carry Mr. Whitaker\u2019s letter with me.<\/p>\n
