My first instinct was to refuse.<\/p>\n

For the past half hour, I had been trying to force Brooke\u2019s voice out of my head. The idea of being photographed in that swimsuit brought every cruel word rushing back.<\/p>\n

Then I looked at Amelia.<\/p>\n

She was not begging.<\/p>\n

Only hopeful.<\/p>\n

And in that moment, I realized something.<\/p>\n

If I refused because of Brooke, then Brooke would still be deciding how I was allowed to be seen.<\/p>\n

So I stood.<\/p>\n

Before walking toward the pool, I folded my cover-up and left it behind on the chair.<\/p>\n

As we approached the photo area, Amelia slipped her hand into mine and swung our arms once, as if testing whether the day still belonged to us.<\/p>\n

I understood then that staying was not about proving anything to Brooke.<\/p>\n

It was about teaching Amelia what shame should never be allowed to do.<\/p>\n

It should not send you home.<\/p>\n

It should not make you shrink inside your own body.<\/p>\n

It should not steal a memory created through love.<\/p>\n

So when the photographer raised his camera, I stood taller, smiled at my granddaughter, and allowed myself to be seen.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne picture,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

The photographer barely posed us. He only asked us to walk toward the water while holding hands.<\/p>\n

Halfway there, Amelia whispered something that made me laugh.<\/p>\n

That was the photograph they selected.<\/p>\n

Afterward, we ate lunch beneath the shade. Amelia had fries, lemonade, and a birthday cupcake topped with one candle. Halfway through the meal, she reached into our bag, pulled out one of the juice boxes, and slid it across the table toward me.<\/p>\n

I laughed so hard I nearly cried.<\/p>\n

Later, Denise mailed us a copy of the photograph.<\/p>\n

I did not look young.<\/p>\n

I did not look glamorous.<\/p>\n

I looked happy.<\/p>\n

And beside me, Amelia looked safe.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

That evening, after the long drive home, Amelia curled beside me on the couch in her pajamas, still carrying the faint smell of chlorine and sunscreen.<\/p>\n
