Instead, I found two police cruisers parked outside my house.<\/p>\n

My hand stiffened around the steering wheel.<\/p>\n

The front door stood completely open. My mother, Evelyn Harper, waited on the porch with her arms folded. My older sister, Melissa, lingered behind her, phone in hand, wearing that familiar smug expression she always had whenever she thought she had finally won something.<\/p>\n

Then I heard someone crying.<\/p>\n

Not a t@ntrum. Not whining.<\/p>\n

A frightened, shattered little sob.<\/p>\n

I ran.<\/p>\n

Lily sat on the living room carpet in her pink dinosaur pajamas, gripping her blanket so tightly that her knuckles had turned white. Two uniformed police officers stood beside the couch. One was crouching down, talking gently, but Lily had buried her face against her knees.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy!\u201d she shrieked when she noticed me.<\/p>\n

She hurled herself into my arms with such force that I nearly stumbled backward. Her whole body was trembling.<\/p>\n
