Especially after Lily murmured something in my ear.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe pinched me,\u201d Lily whispered, so quietly I nearly did not hear her. \u201cAunt Melissa said if I cried, Grandma would call the police and they would put me in jail.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach turned icy.<\/p>\n

I did not say it aloud while they were standing there. I simply nodded and pulled my daughter closer.<\/p>\n

Evelyn noticed. \u201cWhat is she saying now?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her. \u201cNothing you need to hear from me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officer Reyes asked Lily whether she wanted to speak somewhere else. Lily shook her head and held tightly to me. I explained to the officers that she was too frigh.ten.ed and that I would bring her to her pediatrician and a child therapist immediately.<\/p>\n

That was my mother\u2019s first mistake.<\/p>\n

She rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n

The second mistake came when Melissa said, \u201cThis is exactly why Lily is spoiled. Natalie lets her manipulate everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officer Daniels heard her. He wrote it down.<\/p>\n

Once the officers were gone, my mother attempted to regain control. She always did. Evelyn Harper had spent my whole life treating every room as though it were a courtroom in which she served as judge, jury, and executioner.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that the drama is over,\u201d she said, \u201cwe need to discuss Lily\u2019s behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

I rose with my daughter still in my arms. \u201cNo. We need to discuss why you were in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa stared at me. \u201cWe were babysitting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were supposed to pick Lily up from preschool and stay until six,\u201d I said. \u201cYou were not supposed to bring Mom here. You were not supposed to go through my bedroom. And you were definitely not supposed to call the police on my child.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother narrowed her eyes. \u201cYou should be grateful. I raised two daughters. I know what children need.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward Melissa. \u201cGive me my house key.\u201d<\/p>\n

She scoffed. \u201cSeriously?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa dug into her purse and tossed the key onto the coffee table. It bounced once before landing beside Lily\u2019s forgotten crayons.<\/p>\n
