When she realized I had never stopped searching, she recorded a message asking Gwen to help the children find me.<\/p>\n

Aria later discovered the tape hidden among Clara\u2019s belongings in a box Gwen had packed.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlay it,\u201d I said. \u201cPeace built on a lie isn\u2019t peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clara\u2019s weakened voice filled the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cAria. Shaun. Your father loved you. Gwen believed she was protecting me, but fear isn\u2019t truth. I should\u2019ve asked your father for the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aria covered her mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cGwen said you caused Mom\u2019s stroke,\u201d Shaun said from the doorway. \u201cShe said Mom collapsed because you chose another woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

My grip tightened around my cane.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd after Mom struggled for years, Gwen said she\u2019d lost the will to recover because of you,\u201d Aria added. \u201cWe blamed you when she died.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at both of them.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were children living inside the only story an adult allowed you to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I called Gwen.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found Clara\u2019s note.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you want, Andrew?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve spoken for my wife long enough. Tomorrow, you listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The family gathered the following evening.<\/p>\n

Gwen stood at the head of the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did what Clara needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cYou did what kept Clara dependent on you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI protected her from you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou photographed me, assumed the worst, then hid behind the car accident.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned to Aria and Shaun.<\/p>\n

\u201cI failed your mother too. She asked me what I was hiding, and I gave her silence. I thought being faithful was enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen raised her chin.<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

I faced her again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was my failure. The next 40 years were your choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aria placed Sarah\u2019s records on the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid Dad ever say he was leaving us?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you learn that he was searching?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n

Shaun rested his arm on the table, the old watch visible on his wrist.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou let us hate him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought the truth would destroy you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I played Clara\u2019s recording.<\/p>\n

When it ended, no one spoke in Gwen\u2019s defense.<\/p>\n

I picked up the recorder.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t get to decide what Clara believed anymore. You don\u2019t get to speak for my children. You don\u2019t get to call control love.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, Aria and Shaun met me at the bridge.<\/p>\n

I untied the faded ribbon I had replaced every year.<\/p>\n
