My mother remained completely still for three seconds.<\/p>\n

That was how I knew the eruption was coming.<\/p>\n

Patricia Carter rarely raised her voice first. She calculated. She searched for weakness, identified the person most likely to surrender, and kept pressing until everyone adjusted themselves around her.<\/p>\n

This time, she turned toward Emily\u2019s upstairs window.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily!\u201d she called. \u201cCome down here and explain why your husband is acting insane.\u201d<\/p>\n

The curtains stayed motionless.<\/p>\n

I said, \u201cDon\u2019t yell at my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

My father moved closer until his chest nearly touched mine. Richard had used that tactic throughout my childhood. He was six feet tall, still broad in his late sixties, and believed that physical size combined with silence automatically created authority.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are going to let your mother inside,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Disbelief flashed across his face. I was thirty-eight, yet he still saw the child who apologized even when he had done nothing wrong.<\/p>\n

Behind him, my sister-in-law Jenna adjusted a beach bag on her shoulder. \u201cDaniel, seriously, where are we supposed to go?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark scoffed. \u201cFor thirteen people? During summer weekend rates?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat sounds like something you should have considered before ignoring us.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother\u2019s face turned red. \u201cYou selfish little man.\u201d<\/p>\n

The property manager, a composed man named Luis, cleared his throat. \u201cSir, we do need the driveway clear. The treatment crew is arriving in about fifteen minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard spun toward him. \u201cWe\u2019re family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luis checked his clipboard. \u201cYou\u2019re not listed as authorized occupants.\u201d<\/p>\n

That statement struck harder than anything I could have said myself.<\/p>\n

My mother grabbed her phone. A moment later, mine lit up with notifications from the family group chat.<\/p>\n

Patricia: Daniel has locked us out of the beach house.<\/p>\n

Aunt Carol: What? After they drove all that way?<\/p>\n

Cousin Nate: That\u2019s cold.<\/p>\n

Mark: Lily is \u201csick\u201d apparently.<\/p>\n

I typed one reply.<\/p>\n

Daniel: Lily has strep. We asked them to wait. They refused. The house is not available.<\/p>\n

Then I attached screenshots of Emily\u2019s message, my father\u2019s \u201cNothing is changing,\u201d and my response, \u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group chat fell silent.<\/p>\n

My mother saw the screenshots and looked at me with pure rage.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think evidence makes you right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cIt makes lying harder.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Lily appeared behind the glass front door, still in her pajamas and clutching her stuffed rabbit. Her hair was tangled and her eyes looked watery.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaddy?\u201d she whispered through the door.<\/p>\n

Emily stood behind her, pale and exhausted, one hand resting on Lily\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n

My mother\u2019s expression transformed instantly. She adopted her public grandmother face: gentle eyes, trembling lips, one hand over her heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, my poor baby,\u201d she said loudly enough for everyone to hear. \u201cGrandma\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily stepped backward.<\/p>\n

That tiny movement ended something inside me.<\/p>\n

I turned toward my relatives and said, \u201cLeave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard pointed a finger toward my face. \u201cThis is not over.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded. \u201cYou\u2019re right. It isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
