I met Marcus at a roadside diner two days later.<\/p>\n

David had contacted him again and offered extra money for photographs showing me confused or drinking in public.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cSaturday. He said he would send the address.\u201d<\/p>\n

That evening, David poured himself a drink and announced that he had made a dinner reservation for us on Saturday.<\/p>\n

It was a restaurant near the lake cabin.<\/p>\n

Everything became clear.<\/p>\n

He intended to place me in public, encourage me to drink, and have Marcus photograph me. The restaurant was close enough to the cabin to support a story that I had driven there while confused.<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat sounds perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

After David went upstairs, I sent Karen one word:<\/p>\n

Saturday.<\/p>\n

By the time the evening arrived, we had prepared carefully.<\/p>\n

Marcus had given Karen a sworn statement. His payment records showed transfers linked to David. The guardianship petition had already been filed with the court, meaning Karen could legally obtain copies without using anything I found in his office.<\/p>\n

At the restaurant, David behaved like the loving husband he wanted everyone to see.<\/p>\n

I never touched it.<\/p>\n

David opened it.<\/p>\n

The color disappeared from his face.<\/p>\n

Inside were copies of his fabricated notes, Marcus\u2019s payment records, the guardianship documents, and the correspondence concerning the cabin.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know about Marcus,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cI know you\u2019re trying to have me declared incapable so you can control and sell my property.\u201d<\/p>\n

David quickly regained his composure.<\/p>\n

\u201cRachel, you\u2019re misunderstanding what you found.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAm I forgetting things again?\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice hardened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou entered my office. Anything you took is inadmissible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t need anything from your desk. Marcus gave a formal statement. The payment records came from his account, and the guardianship papers were filed with the court.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, David had no prepared answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cKaren has secured the evidence,\u201d I continued. \u201cOur children will hear the truth from me tonight\u2014not from you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I placed divorce papers on top of the folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to sign them here,\u201d I said. \u201cBut this marriage is over.\u201d<\/p>\n

David stared at me.<\/p>\n

I left enough cash to cover my half of the dinner, stood, and walked away.<\/p>\n

He had planned to turn that restaurant into proof that I was unstable.<\/p>\n

Instead, it became the place where his entire scheme collapsed.<\/p>\n

But David was not ready to surrender.<\/p>\n

Before I reached my car, he called our children and claimed I had suffered a serious emotional episode. He said I had become paranoid, accused him of stealing, and abandoned him in the middle of dinner.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, I had already sent Emma and Ben a message asking them not to react until they saw my evidence.<\/p>\n

Karen also filed an emergency response opposing the guardianship petition and requested an independent medical evaluation.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I completed a full neurological and psychological assessment.<\/p>\n

The results showed no cognitive decline.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Marcus agreed to explain everything to investigators.<\/p>\n

David had not hired him because he believed I was ill.<\/p>\n

He had repeatedly instructed Marcus to create reports supporting that conclusion, even when Marcus insisted I behaved normally.<\/p>\n

The developer\u2019s new offer for the cabin was substantially higher than the amount David had mentioned to me. The emails suggested he expected to receive a private consulting payment after arranging the sale.<\/p>\n

He was not only trying to steal control of my property.<\/p>\n
