I married Luke even though my family believed a mechanic could never fit into the future they had imagined for me.<\/p>\n

They judged him from the first evening I brought him home.<\/p>\n

My mother, Veronica, noticed the faint grease stain near his wrist. My father, Tom, noticed his worn work boots. Neither of them mentioned that Luke had carried all my groceries inside while they watched from the window.<\/p>\n

During dinner, Mom asked whether he had ever considered attending college.<\/p>\n

Luke smiled politely.<\/p>\n

\u201cI considered many things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad chuckled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat usually means no.\u201d<\/p>\n

I immediately defended him.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuke already has a career.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom claimed they were only worried about my long-term security. According to them, hard work was not enough. A man needed education, status, and a profession they considered respectable.<\/p>\n

Luke did not argue.<\/p>\n

Instead, he listened to the sound of my father\u2019s car outside.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes your vehicle make a grinding noise when you brake?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

Dad looked surprised.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard it when you arrived. You should have the rotors inspected before the damage becomes more expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within seconds, Dad was asking Luke for mechanical advice. He trusted Luke\u2019s expertise while insulting the career that gave him that knowledge.<\/p>\n

Luke never pointed out the hypocrisy.<\/p>\n

That was the kind of man he was. He gave people enough silence to hear themselves.<\/p>\n

My aunt Alison arrived later and immediately studied him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou must be the mechanic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHis name is Luke,\u201d I corrected her.<\/p>\n

She looked at his face for several seconds.<\/p>\n

Luke explained that his mother had once worked for families in our neighborhood.<\/p>\n

When Luke stepped away to answer a phone call, my family surrounded me.<\/p>\n

Mom said love could not pay bills. Dad claimed a decent man could still be the wrong man for my future. Alison warned that people from different backgrounds eventually became embarrassed by one another.<\/p>\n

Through the kitchen door, Luke caught my eye and gave me a small smile.<\/p>\n

He understood exactly what they were saying.<\/p>\n

But he also knew that I had spent most of my life trying to keep peace in my family. He loved me enough not to make the evening more difficult.<\/p>\n

As the wedding approached, my parents increased the pressure.<\/p>\n

Mom warned that I might spend my life compensating for everything Luke lacked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat exactly does he lack?\u201d I demanded.<\/p>\n

She reluctantly answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cEducation, ambition, and social confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLuke owns a successful garage, supports himself, and treats people with more dignity than most of the men you admire.\u201d<\/p>\n

She insisted that one day I would become embarrassed when he could not keep up with my world.<\/p>\n

But my family never asked what kind of life Luke and I were creating together. They only judged what they believed he could provide for me.<\/p>\n

When Luke proposed, Dad asked whether I was truly willing to throw away my future on a man who spent his life beneath cars.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m marrying someone who understands what things\u2014and people\u2014are worth,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

Our wedding was small and simple.<\/p>\n

Luke\u2019s friends moved chairs, his customers brought food, and his coworkers treated everyone like family.<\/p>\n

My relatives smiled for photographs, but their expressions changed whenever the camera turned away.<\/p>\n

Near the cake table, Alison warned that I would eventually remember how I had been raised.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is exactly what I\u2019m afraid of,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n

Then a young server dropped a tray, sending glasses across the floor.<\/p>\n

Luke immediately crouched beside him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t touch the small pieces. You\u2019ll cut yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alison watched them and said coldly, \u201cSome people simply aren\u2019t trained for anything better. His mother knew how to make herself useful in other people\u2019s homes. At least her son learned a trade.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luke became completely still.<\/p>\n

I demanded to know what she meant.<\/p>\n

Alison admitted that his mother had once worked for people our family knew.<\/p>\n

But the expression on Luke\u2019s face was not surprise.<\/p>\n

It was recognition.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot here,\u201d he quietly told me.<\/p>\n

He remained calm through the rest of the reception, but after we returned home, he walked into the garage and came back carrying an old metal box.<\/p>\n
