I opened the door but left the security chain in place.<\/p>\n

Dad leaned toward the narrow opening. \u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning to you too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom\u2019s face was covered in red patches. \u201cThe card was declined at the hotel. We were humiliated in front of Daniel\u2019s parents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa moved closer, clutching a velvet bracelet case. \u201cYou sabotaged Thanksgiving because you weren\u2019t invited. That is exactly why I didn\u2019t want you there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tall man behind her shut his eyes.<\/p>\n

I looked at him carefully. \u201cYou must be Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded stiffly. \u201cDaniel Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n

I recognized the name. He was a senior analyst at Halcyon Capital, one of Blackwood\u2019s largest clients. Not long ago, he had presented findings during an internal fraud investigation I supervised. We had spoken over video, although I had kept my camera off during those meetings.<\/p>\n

Vanessa pointed toward me. \u201cTell her what you told us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel looked from her to me. \u201cI told them the card was issued by Blackwood Forensic Partners. I also told them the account holder\u2019s name was Emma Lawson.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence filled the hallway.<\/p>\n

Dad recovered first. \u201cSo what? She does clerical work there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s expression became cold. \u201cNo, sir. Emma Lawson founded Blackwood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa gave a loud, forced laugh. \u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n

I released the chain and opened the door fully. On the entry table behind me sat the Governor\u2019s Award for Financial Integrity, a framed photograph of my business partners, and a magazine cover Vanessa had apparently never cared enough to read.<\/p>\n

Daniel turned pale. \u201cMs. Lawson, I\u2019m sorry. I didn\u2019t realize\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t your fault.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa seized his sleeve. \u201cStop acting impressed. She\u2019s always exaggerating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel pulled free. \u201cYour sister led the investigation that saved my firm forty-one million dollars. My managing director calls her the most disciplined investigator he has ever met.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom stared at me as though I had betrayed her personally. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell us?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did. You said forensic accounting sounded boring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad pointed a finger at me. \u201cTurn the card back on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression darkened. \u201cWe\u2019re your family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou forged my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n

That silenced him.<\/p>\n

I picked up a folder from the table. \u201cThe audit found the loans. It found Vanessa\u2019s charges. It found Mom\u2019s approvals. My attorney has preserved everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom\u2019s lips began trembling. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t report your own parents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t decided yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa\u2019s confidence returned immediately. \u201cYou\u2019re bluffing. You need us. You always come back.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward Daniel. \u201cDid she tell you they live in my house?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked directly at Vanessa.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said Dad bought it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe title belongs to my company. Their occupancy extension was waiting for my signature yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom understood before the others. Her knees almost gave way.<\/p>\n

I continued in a voice calm enough to frighten them. \u201cBecause I wasn\u2019t welcome at Thanksgiving, I assumed you wanted independence. The extension is canceled. Formal notice will arrive Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad shouted and rushed toward the doorway.<\/p>\n

Daniel stepped between us.<\/p>\n

Then he faced Vanessa and said quietly, \u201cYou didn\u2019t exclude the embarrassing sister. You excluded the woman financing your entire life.\u201d<\/p>\n
