After struggling to dress them, pack the diaper bag, and secure all three carriers, I reached for the car keys.<\/p>\n

The hook was empty.<\/p>\n

I searched the kitchen, my purse, and every drawer.<\/p>\n

I looked at my children and finally recognized what Ryan had done. Taking the keys was not protection.<\/p>\n

I ended the call and contacted my brother, Shaun.<\/p>\n

The moment I told him the babies needed a ride, he said he was coming.<\/p>\n

The property was older and had remained mostly empty because Ryan disliked it. He called it inconvenient and outdated, and I had always found surrendering easier than arguing.<\/p>\n

Shaun nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I\u2019ll help you make the house safe for the babies.\u201d<\/p>\n

At a red light, Ryan sent me a photograph of himself drinking beside the water.<\/p>\n

His caption read, \u201cFinally getting the rest I earned.\u201d<\/p>\n

I saved the message.<\/p>\n

When we reached my house, my mother was waiting. Shaun had called her after the appointment.<\/p>\n

She looked at the babies and then at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you need?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI need you to watch them while I make some calls.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd after that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe open the old house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside, I called an attorney.<\/p>\n

She told me to photograph every room, preserve Ryan\u2019s messages, take only my belongings and the babies\u2019 necessities, and leave his personal property untouched.<\/p>\n

I hired movers and documented everything carefully.<\/p>\n

While they disassembled the cribs, Ryan called on video.<\/p>\n

\u201cMovers.\u201d<\/p>\n

His smile disappeared.<\/p>\n
