Part 2: The Evidence They Forgot<\/strong><\/h1>\n

When Vanessa arrived, police vehicles lined the street. A city inspector stood near the driveway, and a locksmith waited nearby.<\/p>\n

Melissa rushed toward her.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you insane? You sent police to my house!\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa calmly corrected her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Todd stepped forward. \u201cYou could have called us like a normal person.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI chose something more effective.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officer Daniel Ruiz approached. Vanessa had already sent him the deed, years of utility bills, insurance records, and images from her security cameras.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe unlawful entry and property damage have been documented,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe city has also confirmed that no permits were issued for demolition, plumbing, or electrical work.\u201d<\/p>\n

The building inspector described exposed wires, improperly disconnected pipes, and water collecting beneath the bathroom floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis structure is unsafe,\u201d she said. \u201cA stop-work order is being issued.\u201d<\/p>\n

Todd raised his hands. \u201cWe were improving the house!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot without the owner\u2019s permission,\u201d the inspector replied.<\/p>\n

Then Diane arrived, already demanding that Vanessa stop.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese people are your family,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I am the owner,\u201d Vanessa answered.<\/p>\n

Diane argued that Melissa needed somewhere to live and that everything could have been settled privately.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Vanessa said. \u201cIt could have been requested privately.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officer Ruiz entered the house with Vanessa to document the damage. In the kitchen, cabinets had been pulled from the walls, granite was cracked, and drywall had been opened. The bathroom floor was destroyed, and fixtures had been removed incorrectly.<\/p>\n

Then they reached Vanessa\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

The filing cabinet stood open. Documents were scattered across the floor, and a locked box had been forced apart.<\/p>\n

Officer Ruiz noticed Vanessa\u2019s expression.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is missing?\u201d<\/p>\n

The case contained diamond earrings inherited from Vanessa\u2019s grandmother, a gold bracelet she had purchased after her first promotion, and an expensive watch she had bought after paying off her student loans.<\/p>\n

Every item had been photographed and appraised.<\/p>\n

A police officer called from outside.<\/p>\n

Inside Todd\u2019s truck, visible through the window in a grocery bag, was the missing blue leather case.<\/p>\n

Melissa began crying.<\/p>\n

Todd turned pale.<\/p>\n

Todd was arrested first because the stolen property was found in his vehicle. Melissa was arrested shortly afterward when the security footage was reviewed.<\/p>\n

One recording showed Melissa and Todd entering the house three days before the workers arrived. They carried storage containers inside and removed documents from Vanessa\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

Another clip showed Todd carrying the jewelry case to his truck late at night.<\/p>\n

Todd\u2019s parents tried to help but only made things worse. Frank admitted he knew Vanessa legally owned the property. Loretta admitted Melissa had told them Vanessa would not return until Thursday.<\/p>\n

That destroyed any claim that they believed they had permission.<\/p>\n

As officers placed Melissa in handcuffs, she turned toward Vanessa.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re really going to let them do this to me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa held her gaze.<\/p>\n
