Two days after his eighteenth birthday, my son walked into the kitchen wearing the proud smile he usually saved for terrible decisions.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, Mom. Guess what?\u201d<\/p>\n

I was chopping vegetables for dinner. The moment I saw his expression, I placed the knife on the counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dustin laughed and rolled up his sleeve.<\/p>\n

At first, I thought he was showing me a bruise. Then I saw a woman\u2019s face staring back at me from his upper arm.<\/p>\n

It was Barbra\u2014his stepmother.<\/p>\n

The tattoo captured everything in shocking detail: her eyes, her smile, even the small beauty mark near her mouth.<\/p>\n

I gripped the counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is Barbra\u2019s face on your shoulder?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dustin\u2019s smile faded slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo am I,\u201d I replied. \u201cI don\u2019t see my portrait on your other arm.\u201d<\/p>\n

He tried to pull his sleeve down, but the fabric caught against the plastic protecting the fresh tattoo.<\/p>\n

\u201cCareful,\u201d I said automatically. \u201cYou\u2019ll irritate it.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was motherhood. Even when your child did something completely unbelievable, part of you still worried about infection.<\/p>\n

I turned off the stove and told him to sit down.<\/p>\n

I was not against tattoos. Dustin had discussed getting one for years, and I had expected a band logo, an anime character, or some symbol he might regret later.<\/p>\n

A realistic portrait of his stepmother had never been mentioned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWas this your idea?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The answer came too quickly.<\/p>\n

Dustin could barely choose pizza toppings without asking for opinions. He had not suddenly decided to permanently place Barbra\u2019s face on his body.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much did it cost?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou sat there for hours, but you don\u2019t know the price?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho did?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen, my ex-husband, once complained for days about paying eighty dollars for a school trip. Yet he had spent nearly five hundred dollars on this tattoo.<\/p>\n

Dustin explained that Barbra had been feeling excluded from the family. She worried that he and Stephen still treated her as though she were temporary.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd your father believed your shoulder could repair his marriage?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said she needed proof that she mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t he tattoo her face on himself?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dustin became defensive.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad said it would help everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

I reached across the table and placed my hand over his restless fingers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not angry because you got a tattoo. I\u2019m angry because I don\u2019t believe you truly wanted this one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m eighteen. I can make my own decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing eighteen does not make you impossible to manipulate.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face turned red.<\/p>\n

Finally, after a long silence, he whispered, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t free.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did he offer you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dustin stood and paced toward the sink.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a favor for a favor.\u201d<\/p>\n

His father had told him that families made sacrifices for one another. Dustin would make Barbra feel accepted, and Stephen would help him with something important.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did he promise?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dustin stared at the floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cCollege.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dustin had been accepted into a strong engineering program three hours away. Financial aid covered part of the tuition, but a large gap remained.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said if I got the tattoo for Barbra, he would pay the rest,\u201d Dustin admitted. \u201cHe said I wouldn\u2019t need to worry about school.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid he put it in writing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid he transfer any money?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid he contact the university?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

I picked up my keys.<\/p>\n

Dustin stepped in front of the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, don\u2019t. You\u2019ll make everything worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at the portrait beneath his sleeve.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father bought a piece of your skin with a promise. Now I\u2019m going to find out whether he ever intended to keep it.\u201d<\/p>\n
