PART 2: THE PROMISE<\/strong><\/h1>\n

When I reached Stephen\u2019s house, I did not bother knocking politely.<\/p>\n

Barbra was folding laundry in the living room when I walked inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou convinced our son to tattoo your wife\u2019s face on his body,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Barbra\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward her. \u201cYou didn\u2019t know?\u201d<\/p>\n

She said Stephen had told her Dustin wanted a tattoo celebrating their blended family. She knew nothing about the portrait being her husband\u2019s idea.<\/p>\n

Stephen sighed as though we were both overreacting.<\/p>\n

\u201cBarbra has felt excluded for years. I suggested Dustin make a meaningful gesture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor college tuition,\u201d I added.<\/p>\n

The room became silent.<\/p>\n

Barbra slowly set down the towel in her hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is she talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said I would help with school.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cDustin believed you promised to cover the tuition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe misunderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe permanently changed his body because he misunderstood you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI never forced him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t need to. You offered something he desperately wanted and made him believe one depended on the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen called it motivation.<\/p>\n

I called it manipulation.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s eighteen,\u201d he argued. \u201cHe\u2019s old enough to make decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is also young enough to trust his father.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, Stephen looked away.<\/p>\n

Barbra asked whether Dustin truly believed his entire education would be paid.<\/p>\n

Stephen avoided answering.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never asked for a tattoo,\u201d she whispered. \u201cI only told you I wanted to feel like part of the family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to fix the problem,\u201d Stephen replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou used Dustin.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI included him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou bargained with him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Stephen insisted everyone was being dramatic. He had never chosen a specific amount and said any contribution would depend on his finances.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you promised something you had not even planned,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

The front door opened.<\/p>\n

Dustin stood in the entryway.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told you to stay home,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked directly at his father.<\/p>\n

\u201cWere you really going to pay for college?\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen took a slow breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was going to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI would have done what I could.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told me I wouldn\u2019t have to worry anymore,\u201d Dustin said, his voice shaking. \u201cYou said if I helped save your marriage, you would take care of school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen shifted uncomfortably.<\/p>\n

\u201cI may have said something like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

I watched the hope disappear from my son\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you never meant all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI meant that I would contribute.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou let me believe you meant everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen reached toward him, but Dustin stepped back.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could have found another solution,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did not need to do this,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought this was the solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barbra covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes.<\/p>\n

Stephen looked frustrated rather than ashamed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t understand why everyone is acting like I committed a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cYou did something worse. You taught your son that his body was something he could trade for your approval.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n

Barbra approached Dustin and looked at the tattoo.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t your fault,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time you see my face, you will remember what happened today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dustin looked down at his arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to cover it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen protested that the tattoo was new and expensive.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care,\u201d Dustin replied. \u201cI don\u2019t want to see it anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
